I just got a brand new p229R in .357 SIG. I put its first 50 rounds through it today and it fired great at 25 yards and very accurate for my novice ass. I did however noticed that some of the casings were ejecting up and back causing casings to fly back onto my head or over my right shoulder? Is this an extractor issue or just a break in issue? Your insight and or guidance is greatly appreciated!

Ejecting over your right shoulder is OK, hitting you in the head isn’t!

Sounds like an extractor issue to me.  Take a real good look at it and make sure it’s properly formed (no chips or such) and is clean underneath the hook.

I’d also make sure the extractor moves correctly and take a look at the ejector for any obvious issues (I doubt either of these is causing your problem, but it’s always good to check).

If you got any empties that you know for certain came from this pistol, chamber them and try cycling them by hand to see where they go.  Do not use empties from any other pistol (esp. a Glock) since they may get stuck in your SIG’s fairly tight chamber.  You could also try this with dummy rounds, if you have any.  Don’t try this with live rounds except at a range!

Granted, it does seem possible that maybe the slide isn’t quite cycling fully since it isn’t broken in, causing this problem.

If everything looks OK, try cleaning and heavily lubricating the pistol, and shoot the hottest ammo you find through it and see what happens.

If it’s still hitting you on the head after 200+ rounds, call SIG.

Look at the ejector, and see if it skewed at all.  It doesnt sound like an extractor thing.

Its been about 6 months since I fired a 229, but I remember they chucked brass high and far across(if that makes sense) my right shoulder.  But not straight back hitting you in the head.

If the brass extracts fine, its not the extractor.  If it ejects funny, look at the ejector.

Thanks 199 and Freerider. I will field strip and clean/lube the weapon and then fire up the rest of my 250 rounds of ammo and see how it does. Thanks again for insight.
