I was having problems with my slide sometimes not fully chambering a round. I would just bump the back and the round would just slide right in. I ordered a new spring from SIG and I noticed the spring that they sent me was quite a bit shorter than the one I was replaceing. I take it out for a little target practice and it happens again, only once this time though out of 100rds. So I go home and I break out my other pair 229s measure the recoil springs on both and they both measure 4.25" the spring SIG sent me measures 3.5". My question is did SIG send me the wrong spring or maybe are the new 229 springs shorter or what. My other 229s have never had a problem, but this one I can't seem to get a handle on. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Could it possibly be for a P239?

All wire strand springs?

I had a 239 once that kinda stalled when sliding forward, it had to go back for some polishing.

If it helps you any I just measured the springs of both my 239 and 229, and they're both 3.75 inches long. Cal. is .357Sig

What kind of ammo are you useing?  Reloads or factory?  Mags, are they after market or factory?  Have you taken the mags apart, maybe the spring got put in backwards?  Have you let any one else shoot the pistol, have they too had jams?  Make sure you not limp wristing the pistol durring recoil.    Just some ideas.

I appreciate all the input. I am using brand new mags, factory ammo, and I don't think it is a error on my part. I've used my other pair of229s with the same ammo and mags with zero problems. The spring measurement thing is strange though, ChrisLe measured his springs at 3.75 on his 229,239. I think I will call SIG today and see if they can help me.

Strange!

I just measured the recoil spring in my 40 S&W P229 – it’s 4 3/8 inches long.

I also just measured a new (never installed) 40 S&W P229 recoil spring I recently got from Brownells – it’s 4 5/8 inches long!  Incidentally, one end of it is covered in blue paint.

Both are stranded SIG OEM springs.

Sounds like you might have a lemon on your hands.  All things being equal it does happen that an out of spec pistol leaves the factroy.  I'd send it back to Sig.

Perhaps different length springs for different calibers? Both mine (P229 and P239) measured 3.75", but they are both .357Sig

Never mentioned what type of ammo you are using, but I am curious to know.

I mostly shot Federal American Eagle when I first got my P239.  Had somewhat frequent problems fully chambering...in many cases there was a noticible delay (accompanied with a slight "bump" as it went into battery) in the slide fully seating.  Other times it required the slight bump you mentioned to get it into battery.

I switched to the Speer LE "rejects" when those became available, and have been using those since I bought the 229.  Not sure if the AE causes the same problems in the 229.  The AE is kind of a flat-nosed FMJ...maybe a truncated nose or something?    It just doesn't seem to feed reliably.  Not sure if it is the shape of the bullet or something different about where the bullet and casing meet.

Forgot to mention...this is for .357Sig.  Not sure what caliber you are using.

I failed to mention this is a 40 and my other pair are 40s also. My ammo is Winchester white box and S&B 180gr.  The new spring I got from SIG has blue paint on one end, don't know if that means anyting. I think I will try a Wolf  extra power spring before I send it back to SIG. I need to replace some mag springs on my CZ anaway so I will try this last remedy. If  it works it will be cheaper than the $30 to ship it to SIG, if not I will just have a backup spring for later.

Here is the spring out of my 40 229.

Hopefully all of the above posters pulled it off the guide rod to measure.

3-7/8" here... 9mm... removed from guide rod... around 150 rounds through it... bought new in box.

And just to check, you have cleaned it THOROUGHLY, relubed, and tried it, right?
