Looking to get a multi - use gun.... was thinking of a 226 but I'm not sure if it can fill the duty that I'm looking for.... Need .40 cal for self defense ... but looking for 9mm for 3 gun matchs (I want a minimum of 15 round capacity... and really like the DA/SA setup of the Sig.. My dad has a 226 9mm that he has let me shoot before... really nice). Is there a 9mm conversion barrel available that'll reliably function in a 226 .40? |
|
Yes, Bar-Sto sells a barrel that allows conversion of .40 to 9mm. The mags aren't a problem, just buy as many as you need for competition in 9mm and your 15rnd capacity need is met. MecGar makes a 17rnd 226 9mm mag (they OEM for Sig so no worries about quality). |

how is function of the 17 round mags? does anyone make +2 extentions for them? that would rock)... also I know for example if you use a 9mm barrel in a Glock 22 that it can cause problems with the extractor... does the sig have the same problem? Also, is there a specific trim you would reccomend? Not looking for a feather-weight setup per-say..... but I do want/need it to have a rail (to fit my m3x night... then it'll also take over the roll for my home-defense gun) Is there any difference in the trims in respect to their triggers.... other then the double action only version. |

I don't think there are extensions for the 15rnd 9mm 226 mags, I just recalled while writing that MecGar makes 17rnd mags. And because MecGar OEMs SigArm's mags, I doubt there are any extensions. Since they OEM Sig's mags, no concerns as per function. CDNN has the best prices on factory Sig mags, both new and used. But their website might not show the MecGar mags. So I'd call and ask about them (800.588.9500); they have the best and friendliest customer service. I don't know about the conversion issues with extractors. No problems getting a rail, just specify that's the model you need. If you are looking around the internet or in the Equipment Exchange forum here (where you can get great prices!), a 226 with a rail will read as '226R'. The triggers are the same, that's why you can use your .40 or 9mm mags in it. It's the same gun |

http://www.pearcegrip.com/beretta_p2.htm They sell +2 mag extensions but dont know if the fit the 226 mag body even though they fit the 228 mag body. 226 mags fit in the 228 though. The 226 factory 15 rounders and 17 round magazines have the identical body and floorplates. If it does fit the 226 15 round mag it will fit the 17 round magazine as well. I have 17 rounders and se no reason to go to the trouble for another 2 rounds as that makes my mag ugly and excessively long. You do realise your plan has a major flaw... your sights will be way off with one of your barrels. I would have reccomended a .40 226 and one of the complete slide/barrel 9mm asseblies you can buy for the P226 so you can have sights that work but there are differences in the 9mm and the 357/40 frames so I dont know if they work together or not. |
Hmmm..... anyone care to chime in if doing that is possible? How bad would the sights be off? For the 17+2 thing.... I really don't care what it would look like, it wouldn't be for cary or for anything more then for the fact that it would be 2 more rounds I could fire without having to reload the gun durring a 3 gun match. |

I have Mec-Gar 17rds that fit the P226 (my P226 is 9mm, by the way). Function of this magazine is flawless, no complains from my side. Only problem is that I can't get any more of them because where I live (stupid Kaliban). As for the +2 extension, I'd think it would work on the Mec-Gar 17rd magazine, but will have issue with standard factory SIG 15rd 226 magazine or 13rd 228 magazine, simply because the taper on the bottom of the magazine that would prevent follower to go down further to give you the extra two rds capacity. I belive in order to the +2 extension to work, the magazine body have to be straight at the bottom (like Glock mags). Might want to check and use some extra power magazine spring also, because the spring that come with Mec-Gar 17rds mag is not too strong in my opinion.. |
| Umm, why not just get a 9mm P226 and load it up with 17 rds of Gold Dots/Rangers/blender bullet of choice, and not spent the extra $200 on a conversion barrel? 9mm is fine and dandy for self defense. The ability to easily conver calibers is kinda neat, but for a real working gun (not a range toy) I'd want a dedicated piece. |
I dont understand... my 17 round Mecgar and factory 16 round magazine bodies and floor plates are identical. |

As for why not just get a 9mm and stick to it, overall I'm a fan of .40 -- so I'm going to stick with it, not going to argue ballistics with anyone though. I did however come across a used sig 226r in .40 at a friend's gun shop... it's on consignment so he's going to call the guy on tuesday to see if he can do any better on the price (it's at $599 right now) Anyone know what a good going rate is for a 226r in 40 with 2 mags? Damn that gun felt good in my hand, but I'd probably have to find a set of stock grips, not a huge fan of the hogue |
$599 is not too bad. New grip panels from SIG are less than $20 per set. |
