I'm  considering buying my buddy's P239, it is a .40 without night sights he paid $550 for it a few years back and has barely shot it.  I love shooting the thing and he will let it go for what he paid, should I pass and wait for a 9mm or grab it and a conversion barrel?

Great gun.

I would Fo.

I'm not particularly fond of the .40 cal, but that is a great price.

Actually, if it were me I would convert it to .357 SIG instead of 9mm.

That's JMO.

I've really been considering a 357 sig lately since even Walmart and Big 5 around hee have it in stock.  Am I correct in thinking that .40 mage work with 357 sig but not the other way around?

I picked up a CPO P239 .40 S&W at the Big Town Fun Show this past weekend. In spite of it being CPO, it was NIB. $525. I don't need another P239 - but the price was just too good to pass up.

I saw used P239s in OK condition (fair amount of holster wear on slide) at the same show for $699.

So $550 for your buddy's barely used P239 seems like a good price to me.

I suppose it's area dependent but around here that would be a little on the high side.  You have to add in the cost of the conversion barrel ($150+) and if you just want a 9mm P239 you can do better.

How is the P239 to shoot in .357?  I'm thinking about selling my 9mm model off and picking up the same gun in the .357Sig.  I think my holsters would all be compatible.

I've only ever shot the .40 but I really enjoy shooing it as I can get a good grip on it, if I were totally honest it probably fits my hand better than my '95 P229 which makes it easier to shoot. I still love my 229 though, I always end up carrying my .38 instead so the 239 is a great middle ground.

It's a handful in .357 Sig, but it's not uncontrollable. I have a set of Crimson Trace LaserGrips on mine - the CT rubber grips and built in laser help me stay on target.

I have both the .357 Sig and .40 S&W barrels (mags too) for mine. I tend to practice using .40 S&W as it helps keeps costs down.

The P239 is my EDC pistol, and I always carry it setup for .357 Sig.

A few of my students have crossed my line with them over the years and they are a bit snappy but definitely controllable.

The P229 is a little milder (because of frame and slide size) but not by much.

.357 sig will feed from a .40 mag but .40 will not feed from a .357 sig mag.  9mm works with the .40 mags as well.

I thought the P239 mags were like the P229 mags.

Aren't they stamped .40/.357?

If not I stand corrected.

Sig made a dedicated mag for each caliber with the P239.  I've never heard of anyone having problems running .357 through the .40 mags but Sig will tell you the .357 mag is required.

Thank you for explaining that.

I must have been thinking about the P229.

My P229 .40 cal. mags are stamped both.

I wanna say I paid $800 something new for my P239 SAS 9mm about 4 years ago.

Any SIG under $600 is a good deal as long as it's not beat on.

Grab it and don't look back.  I've owned one for over 15 years, carried it off-duty in the .357 Sig configuration.  Bought a .40 S&W barrel for it to expand its capabilities.  I just recently put a Bar-Sto 9mm barrel in it to shoot 9mm.  Hasn't bobbled or hiccuped at all.  Now I have 3 calibers in one platform.

I wish I hadn't started looking at the $400 p226 DAKs. Maybe I need to get the 226 first.

I have now shot the Sig 239 in all three caliber configurations. First, none of them are heavy in recoil. The 9mm gives you the option of 10rd magazines, but the 40 and 357 allow the plus one baseplates. I have no clue if the plus one baseplates will work with the 9mm. It is weird that it is not listed as an option though. And yes, the 40 magazines will feed all three calibers, but the other two are only capable of fedding their designated caliber.

As far as the price, $550 is about the going rate for a very good Sig 239 with contrast sights and two magazines and the 9mm is slightly more desireable.

The .40S&W mags with the plus one base plate hold nine rounds of 9mm and function perfectly (at least they have for me).

As and FYI - if you want to convert it to 9mm you can use an OEM 9mm barrel. no conversion barrel necessary. the P239 is the only one that doesnt need a conversion barrel

Yes, a factory 9mm barrel will operate just fine. Her is an advantage to buying a gun from a friend that you have already shot.  While we all like to shot, that gun is already proven.

I can also corroborate that the 9mm barrel will function great in the 357/40 slide.
I have the SAS 357 and have both the 40 and threaded 9mm barrel for some silent fun.
Great gun and reliable EDC.
