I had always thought that my slide release lever (yes, probably more accurately called a slide catch lever) was very tough to work, but after a week of Tactical Pistol work at Blackwater (now Xe / U.S. Training Center) I'm even more convinced that I need to do something.
I have a P226 TacOps, which has a extended (20rds of 9mm) magwell grip. This grip is slightly different at the top of the grip too - it fits very tightly to the underside of the slide release lever, making it VERY tough to lock the slide back under stress in a malfunction drill, especially when you have gloves on. Releasing the slide is only moderately easier - it could be a lot easier with very slight shape changes. Basically, there is no vertical area to act on - you need to push down on the lever and rely on friction to move the lever - which is as un-positive an action as I can imagine. On this gun, I used to have the same issues as many people with Sigs - the slide would not lock back after firing the last round. Changes to my grip have completely cured this issue by keeping my right thumb away from the release. That said, if an extended control were to be a little higher (like the Glocks, which effectively reside up nearer the slide) that would be a help too. I know such controls exist, or have existed. There is a Review of the Sig P226 SL Sport II that shows pictures of an extended slide release (which appears to be nothing more than the existing slide release bent upwards....), and the Sig-Sauer 2007 Price List shows pricing for such modifications - even if it's nothing more than hand bending the piece up.... Also, an archived version of Bruce Gray's Grayguns.com has mention of an extended slide release, but I can't find it referenced on his current page. Any help would certainly be appreciated. Otherwise I'm going to buy a bunch of releases and get out the TiG welder.... Something has to be done... This gun is too perfect for me in every other way. Thanks in advance for any assistance or insight!!! |
