| I am looking to get a Sig .40 soon but can not decide between the 229 and the 226. What are the differences? please excuse my ignorance. I have never owned a Sig but have always wanted one. |

Quoted:
The 229 has a shorter barrel and is slightly more compact than the 226. This. Sort of the difference between a Glock 17 and a Glock 19. I have the SIG 229 in .40 S&W. It is a great weapon. The weight is very helpful in managing the snap of a .40 round. The SIG 229 is a little more popular than the SIG 226 in .40 S&W. So, you may find a better price and availability on parts and mags for the 229 than the 226 in this caliber. Of course, you can buy a .357 SIG barrel for the 229 or the 226 and shoot .357 SIG through your SIG with the same mags. To be clear, a get a 229 barrel for the 229, and a 226 barrel for the 226. |

I had a 226 when they first came out in the 80's. I always thought it was the best auto I have ever shot. I sold it as I got out of 9's and into the 40's. I bought a 229 when they first came out. I like it but really missed the 226. I bought it and a 220 a couple of years ago. I still think the 226 is the best auto I have even owned. I had retired the 220 to the safe until last week when I bought a 357 sig barrel. Its a lot of fun to shoot now.
