What is the difference between a p229R and a p229 E2?  I'm interested in a p229 e2 as a new carry piece, so I went to the shop to look for one.  The store had a "p229r" in the case.  I asked the gun store clerk what the difference between the R and E2 was, and he said that the E2's are discontinued.  Is this true?  The "p229r" seemed to have the new ergonomic grip design and a short reach trigger, and also accepted 15rnd magazines, but it had the standard trigger reset, and from my research I think the p229 E2 is supposed to have a short reset trigger, correct?  Is this the only difference between the R and the E2?

While I was there the clerk allowed me to directly compare the p229r and the standard p229, and the 229r would accept the old 13 round magazines seemingly snugly, but not vice versa.  I really liked the pistol.  Think I gotta have one.

Thanks for your advice.

The E2 has the SRT and a re-profiled grip that is slimmer in the backstrap its is not discontinued and is still in the 2011 price list. The R is the standard railed version of the p229 and has the STD trigger.

The E2 is the newest pistol so I can't see why it would be discontinued already.  The E2 has a rail so it is considered P229R E2
the E2 refers to the grip and trigger combo

taken from Sig Sauer Site:
one-piece modular grip with improved texture. Used in conjunction with other ergonomic innovations including the reduced reach trigger, SRT™ Short Reset Trigger system and more, the E2 pistols ergonomically fit a much wider range of hand sizes.

the 229R stand for the front "Rail" for accessories
as for the Mag fitting snug there is no difference in the P229's except the rail and maybe trigger/SRT
