Having an issue putting the slide back on the lower after stripping. The slide will not go back on unless I depress the firing pin safety as if to check the firing pin. Any thoughts?

I actually had the exact same problem with a G4 17.  Messed with it for like 5 minutes...was starting to get pissed.  I found it to be easier when I pushed the trigger foward just a little bit.

Yep.

Push the trigger forward.

Then do yourself a favor, get a gen 3 trigger bar and be done with it.  It will lighten your pull too.

The assembly procedure mentioned above is normal for the gen 4 pistols.

The trigger bar is not a GAP trigger bar as i understand it and is an upgrade which is stiffer and supposed to offer more fp lug engagement.

I would not change the triger bar and the trigger pull will get smoother and better on its own in time.

The new 22's are a bit stiff getting the slide on. Normal. It will loosen up over some use. Mine was the same way when new. I have 500 through it & the slide goes on fine.

Interesting. I had never heard of problems with the old one, though.
