OK. Not trying to start a flame, but I have never been able to shoot Glocks that well or comfortably. I have owned a 17, 19, 26, and 21sf. All 3rd Gen.

I always respected them for what they are. Which is a very reliable,  well made handgun at a great price. I just never cared for the feel of them. So they always ended up getting sold.

Now, yesterday I was prowling in the local gunshop. I tried the newer models and really liked them. (I think )

They had the model, can't remember the actual name, it had the odd looking slide serrations. Which actually worked quite well. And they had the Gen4. Both felt pretty good in my hand. Better than the Gen3 I thought.

The Gen4 was $540 and the other was $505. I am going to pick one up in a couple days in a model 17. Any real world advise on which one to get? Any differences to speak of besides the serrations on the one, and backstraps on the Gen4, which I don't think I would change anyway.

Thank you.

Terry

Gen3 RTF2 is the other model you were looking at.  Gen 4 has a reversable mag release and the new spring "should" reduce recoil.  I have a gen3 17 and shot a gen 4 and really couldn't tell much difference.  The new texture is kind of nice.  For the price difference, i would probably just get the Gen3.

I'm not a big fan of the slide serrations on some of the RTF2 models. I'm also not a big fan of the abrasive texture of the RTF2. I'm also not completely sold on the Gen4, at least in 9mm.

All that said, I'd get a regular G17 Gen3 first, a G17 Gen4 second, and a G17 RTF2 Gen3 third.

I think that would be the best / safest bet because the standard Gen 3 is proven. I also don't care for the funky serrations, which have been dropped by Glock, or the RTF2 texture as I think it's too aggressive.

I would however consider the Gen 4 as a first option only if the frame felt that much better to the individual. I know in my case it has made a huge difference and I prefer the Gen 4 but that's probably due to my smaller hands, others may not see the benefit. .

I love my gen 4.  With no backstrap,  its perfect for me and I LOVE the way the new recoil spring handles the recoil.

Very soft shooting gun.

Basicly what I am going on. The feel. To me the 3gen feels almost square. I'm a Sig 226/228 guy, what can I say. The older Glocks shot fine I was just never comfortable shooting them. My groups never seem to tighten. Could shoot nowhere as good with them as Sigs. I know it was me not the gun. I could hand off to someone else and them shoot just fine.

The recoil spring you mentioned. I thought it might help. The G26 has the same setup I believe. And I think it had the least recoil of any that I had.

I almost bought a gen 4 G17 myself, but realized i like the grip on them the way they are. I bought a gen 3 G22 instead and couldnt be happier with it. Just wondering, if i could in the future, put one of the new gen 4 recoil springs into my gen 3 22. i like the grips just fine. recoil isnt bad either. Might make it a softer shooting gun. Might also save some people a couple bucks if its possible. Anyone with any info on this?

Cant be done, the spring is bigger so the hole in the slide and the cutout in the frame for the spring are larger on the gen 4's.

You do realize the smaller of the two backstraps they include with the gen 4's is the exact same contour as a gen 3 right?

Well. I may just wait till someone I know picks up one of the new ones so I can try one out. I know the 3rd Gen is reliable. All the generations I have seen personally have seen.  I just don't care for them. Already owned and parted with a 17, 19, 26, and 21sf. They all just feel square to me. Especially the front strap.

Thought the new ones felt more rounded. But then again I just fondled one in the gun shop for a few minutes.
