Alright, my thoughts were to purchase a Glock 19 for plinkin and a decent carry gun. I know 9mm lacks in stopping power, but ammo is a bit cheaper.
Well I was talking to my buddy who is a fellow gun nut who works at scheels. He tells me they have a returned and Glock 23 "brand new" somebody got the wrong one and returned it, with tritium night sights for $560. Well he also mention that with a barrel and magazines you can pretty much make it into a 9mm, and thats something you can't do with the 19. Somebody help me make a choice. I was trying to find a used 19 but after you pay the 50 bucks for transfering to an FFL you pretty much are paying for new one anyway, a least for the prices I seen the used ones for. DAMN! I was dead set on a 19 now this had to happen.

Sounds like you need to buy a G20 or skip autoloaders altogether and get a .44mag revolver.

I'd opine you won't have much success with this thread with a title of 'Help With Grenade Purchase'... this is the Tech Forum, not General Discussion...

Not a good line to name your thread in a GLOCK forum.  Get the G23 you will like it, you can run 40 SW through it .357Sig with a barrel and your 40 mags will work, and 9mm with a conversion barrel 9mm mags and 9mm extractor.  You really can not go wrong with a G23 or any compact Glock.

Of course, if you really just want a 9mm G19, you could just go for that and not get caught up in the feeling of need to jump on the "deal" that's presented itself. Then you don't have to buy a separate barrel and extractor and mags, etc. Just shoot 9mm through your G19. Check the ammo faqs. There are some great 9mm loads out there that, in my opinion, don't leave the 9mm carriers less well armed than the .40 or .45 carriers. YMMV and all that.

Unless you want to shoot .40, I don't see an advantage to getting a 23. You're gonna be out 150-175 for the barrel and mags to shoot 9mm. Plus I would never trust a converted from .40 to 9mm gun for anything other than the range. The extractot, breech face and ejector are all wrong for 9mm. It will probably work great as a 9mm 99% of the time, but I wouldn't trust it. Now if you'de rather have the larger round for carry then it's a no brainer.

Buy once, cry once. Just get the G19. Your situation is like buying the V6 Mustang when you should've bought the V8 version. Pony up.

9mm lacks stopping power?

Wanna stand in front of one to test that theory of yours?

I would say go with the Glock 19 9mm.

If you like it, other calibers will surely follow suit.

I'm sure I'm not the only one here that will attest to that.

Sorry about the title, guess I wasn't thinking.

Would 480 be to much to pay for a new G19? I pretty sure I'm going to pick up one for that tommorow. If I'm really over paying please let me know. I see them on gunbroker for about this price but then I would have to pay the transfer fee. This way I have to pay the tax so its going to come out about the same. I know LE and Military get a discount, but I don't qualify.

Well, I did it. Proud new owner of a G19. Going out into the blackhills this weekend to look for some cat tracks. So I get to shoot it this weekend. Can't wait! I'm sure everyone seen pics of a plain jane g19 so I won't bother. Thanks for all the input.

I was talking about the difference between 9mm and .40SW, was I wrong to say it lacks stopping power compared to a .40? All my life I thought a .40 had more ass than a 9mm. WTF

cant go wrong with the G19.

Dont listen to the "9mm is weak" crap.

Thats an arguement made buy military and has carried over to civilian use.

Military carry FMJ..modern civilian rounds a FAR better stoppers. plus unless your going to get into it with a cracked out skinny or terrorist..i think you will be fine

It depends on the gun.  You can change everything out on the G23 to make the only difference hte breechface which I HIGHLY doubt will make it any less reliable than the G19.  Mine has been 100% reliable with only a barrel and mag conversion over 500 rounds and I am going to change it to be totally a 9mm and use it for ccw.   Reliable is reliable plus I can shoot lead with the LWD barrel.

To the OP.  If you aren't an EMT, LEO, FF, etc.  I think that is a good deal for the gun.

It stands to reason if there is no chance it would effect reliability Glock would make them the same as it is easier and cheaper to make as many parts the same as they can. If there were no real difference why would Glock/S&W/SIG etc. waste money making a run of 9mm slides and then switching over to make .40 slides when they could make them all the same? All they would then have to do is produce a slightly thicker 9mm barrel. As faras 500 rounds being a true test of reliability on a platform that goes tens of thousands of rounds unmoddified, I think we have a different standard of reliability. If you do a search on GT you'll see there are several people with the conversion barrel that don;t consider them reliable enough for carry.
