I tore down my G22 for it's weekly inspection and noticed that about a 1/3 of the recoil spring assembly rod end was missing. To be more precise the flat that seats against the breech end of the barrel. There has only been a few thousand rounds through this weapon and am wondering how often this happens? Out of my 4 other Glock's anpother G22 fired full auto right out the box! We pulled that one apart and swaped parts with another which solved that situation. Has anyone else had out of the ordinary G22 failure? |
It's uncommon but it does happen. More so with the higher-recoiling Glocks (.357, .40, .45, 10mm). It does happen on 9mm but not as often and usually takes longer. I'm definetly an advocate for replacing the plastic guide rod with a Steel or Tungsten rod. The stock poundage spring is 17lbs if you want to stay close to stock. The G22 should have a 20# recoil spring in my opinion. Glock uses the plastic guide rod and the same 17# spring (calculated for the 9mm) for all full-size Glocks to cut cost. The plastic rod/spring is only about $10 to replace if you just want to stay all stock.
Now that is VERY rare, I've never heard of such a case -- yours is the first. All Glocks are test-fired at the factory. |
| Nearly all of the guide rods I've seen broken in that were caused by improper installation. It's easy to put the rod in the wrong slot and have either the rod snap or the round portion sheared off during recoil. The good news is that they cost an armorer about $3.00 to replace. For that price, you can have several stashed away in reserve and replace them every few thousand rounds to ensure absolute reliability. |
| As a Glock armorer I can tell you that if you do not seat it properly when reassemblying you will have this problem. When I was in the course it was not recommended to replace the rod with steel because it was designed to "flex" I use both and never had a problem. Find a armorer in your area he will order some from Glock. |
