im looking to pick my first glock up here soon , what i cant decide on is whether to get the glock 19 or the glock 23, the whole 9mm vs the 40 has really got me going insane, evry body says that the 40 is better than the 9, then some people say the 9mm with good jacketed hollow points is just as good as the 40, what should i get.
please help

My first handgun was a Glock 23. I still shoot it. But if I had to do it again my first would have been a 19. Especially with the price of ammo. 9mm is MUCH cheaper. the cheaper the ammo the more you will shoot, the more you shoot the better you'll be. 9mm is just fine for self defense too. Glock 19 FTW!

G19
I have 2 19's and a 23.

19 is a joy to shoot and cheap. 23 is the same gun with a little more kick and a little more pricey for ammo.

You can get the 23, a glock conversion barrel and G19 mags, then you have 2 in one gun.

They're both great pistols.  Truly.  You'd be served very well with either.

I see the whole "caliber debate" thing as academic.  All service calibers have advantages and shortcomings, and they all do an adequate job, with modern high quality ammo.

The .40 has more muzzle energy.

But the 9mm has more mag capacity, and a little easier to shoot.

Either one will do, honestly.  I like 'em both.

Get the 9mm.  Cheaper to feed, less recoil, faster follow up shots.  I'm suprised noone mentioned that glock 40's tend to work like this
Just kidding about the kB!...kind of.

I've shot thousands of reloads out of my 23 with no issues at all.

G19 and you'll have no regrets.  After all the dust settles with the ammo whoring hysteria, if you still REALLY want a .40, then get on, but my guess your money will go a lot further for you with 9mm.

This^, if to be carried in the woods, then the 23. Do some research on ballistics and pick one, you'll be more confused after this thread than before.

Same here.  The reason nobody had yet mentioned the "KB issue" is because it would be an ignorant, uninformed comment, proliferation of internet hype.

Do you want it for all around shooting or personal protection? If PP go .40 minimum.

If this is your first centerfire handgun... get the 19 and tons of trigger time.  .40 has some extra recoil and flip that might be hard for a first-timer to deal with in addition to learning how to handle a gun.  the 19 with a good HST or ranger t wil be fine

This whole 40 being snappy to shoot is crazy.  I have a 27 and hardly notice any more recoil while shooting.  I also own a 19 and would recommend it to anybody it's an awesome gun.  But you have to admit bigger=heavier=more stopping power.  For self defence get the 27 or 23 but if you do get the 19 instead you still win.

Glock 19 is what I went when I got my first Glock pistol.  I already had some 9mm ammo on hand and I enjoyed shooting this caliber for over 15 years.  It is cheap to shoot and a capable round for defensive purposes.

It is so funny when I went to the sporting goods store the other day, there was tons of .40 S&W ammo on the shelf and only a few boxes of 9mm and .45 ACP.  I guess locally .40 S&W isn't very popular.

I am a die hard 45 ACP fan grew up shooting that round.  I own a glock 19 and love it.  Didn't think when I bought it I would be into it as much as I am but I have since gotten my best friend to go out and buy one.  Its a great carry pistol, ammo is cheap, and it is fun to shoot.

Get the 19. I just picked one up myself and I am not a GLOCK fan. If you want a bigger caliber later go .45 . But as a first gun a 9mm is a joy and much cheaper to shoot.

As a self defense gun I think it would also be fine. I mean who wants to get shot with a 9mm. Although I carry a 1911 most of the time I will also carry a 9mm without fear that the round won't stop zombies.

NICE. I went to a local shop today, they had a used Pre-Ban ruger 10/22, HAD.

So I bought my first Glock today G19... lol. wifey would have been happier w/ $110 rifle...
I'm happier!!

I normally carry a 1911, and I wanted a nice reliable 9mm. I think ammo was almost 1/3 cheaper too!

OKAY WE HEAR YOU!

Yes, the G19 is a great pistol.
