just got another G17, and like my other ones, the chrome plate is already peeling off the FPS after about 700 rounds. what's the deal? i'm three for three on these parts now, and i'm not a big fan of buying new replacement parts for brand-new guns. i've never had any functional issues with my glocks, but corrosion resistance is one of the big +'s about the glocks, and if the plating flakes off, i'm losing some of that. ETA: the locking block on both my 17's and one of my 19's lost plating as well. guns have approx. 3500, 1500, and 700 rounds on them. anyone else have problems with the chrome plate on any of their glock parts? |

My G19 is doing it too, but after the abuse I have put it through so far, there has not been any corrosion there. I have no plans to replace it at this time, mainly because I think the replacement isn't going to be better anyways.
I understand the concern though - what if something flakes off where you don't see it and messes the pistol up when you need it most? |

I don't get it. Do you mean the original finish or aftermarket chrome plating? I've never seen the original finish flake. the original plate. several parts are plated, from the factory, to provide a long-lasting, corrosion resistant, hard surface. unfortunately, from time to time, some glocks have some plate issues. nearly all of mine have had the "firing pin safety" flake... luck of the draw i guess. |

Your issue isn't 'flaking' but rather the Firing Pin Safety (FPS) is being nicked by an edge on the firing pin. Little chips around the base of the pin are quite common as the safety isn't moving completely out of the way before the firing pin travels forward. My G22 has 27,000 rounds through it and while dinged up a bit, my FPS has performed flawlessly.

Yeah, but that doesn't explain how the chrome is flaking off the bottom of the part. Meaning the part that sticks out the bottom of the slide that the trigger bar pushes up against to disable the FPS. No nicking on the firing pin. And my trigger bar is polished at all contact points, so no snags there either. I think they just ran a bad batch of plating. |

I guess I wasn't clear. The grove in the firing pin nicks the corner of the safety, not the other way around. This happens when the firing pin starts forward and the FPS hasn't been pushed completely out of the way buy the trigger bar actuator. The G21s had a stoppage issue a while back and the fix was a higher actuator protrusion on the trigger bar which solves both problems. As far as the bottom of the FPS flaking, I've not seen issue there, however, I give all my Glocks a 25¢ trigger job which includes polishing the FPS.

I just bought a brand new G26, what is a FPS, i want to look and see if its peeling. What else will flake off? FPS is the Firing Pin Safety, though i don't think that term is "technically" correct in the case of glocks. i believe it is actually called a "striker plunger". anyhow, if you pull the slide from your pistol, and flip it over, you'll notice a small silver "button" that protrudes from the slide near the breech face. that is the FPS. you won't be able to see if the plating is bad until you shoot it a bunch, after which you'll see where the plate chipped off where the trigger bar contacts it. glock has had some plate issues in the past, though it is EXTREMELY rare. unfortunately, nearly every one i own has parts from one of those bad plate batches. |
|
wait... you guys are getting this twisted over a 1/4 inch pin that you can't even see and it doesn't affect anything?
|
| Interesting, I've never seen a flaking issue on that surface. |

The correct term is "firing pin safety".Glock uses the technical term "firing pin" not "striker" regardless of the fact that Glocks do not use a hammer. If it was called a "striker" the the part in question would be a "striker safety". |
