I bought a Glock M39 yesterday at a gun show in Knoxville, I actually traded even for a model 31. I was reading another gun forum that said that the gap ammo will eventually go away, that it was not the best so it wont last long. Give some feed back if you can, I also have a model 38 gap I got in trade, so will I have 2 useless gaps on my hands or should I not worry about it.

.45 GAP

Enjoy your Glock 45 GAP. I got a 38 a while back and love it. I have owned a couple of 21s over the years and sold them because I didn't like the size of the grip. I looked at a 21SF and wasn't impressed. Doing a side by side comparison, unless I was looking at the pistols, it was hard to tell which was which. I didn't think there was much of a difference in feel.

There are more and more agencies adopting the Glock GAPs, whatever the reason may be, it is getting out there more and more. I can see it catching on in other countries where they are not allowed to own a military caliber handgun, so unless a military somewhere goes GAP, I imagine it will be a viable option.

It kills me all the NaySayers that bitch and bellyache about Glock wanting his name on a caliber, who cares??? Lots of calibers are named after people, and since old Gaston seems to have made a pretty good impression in the handgun world, why not give him a caliber with his name on it??? As far as it being a question that no one asked, these are probably the same people out there shooting one of the WSM rifles that does the same thing a long mag does, only in a shorter package. Geez, where did I hear that before??? What about the .308 Win versus the .30-06??? Why did that change?

I remember hearing a lot of the same arguments when the .40 Short and Weak came out, but look where it is today. With factory loads, the GAP is close to, or better than some of the ACP loads. Give it a little more time and see where it ends up.

i dont mind that glock has a cartriged named after his namesake--thats cool...it just seems stupid that instead of re-designing the grip size of the G21 (to take the double stacked mags) to make it smaller to fit more folk's hands in the 1st place...glock engineers 1st decided to introduce a replacement cartrige to fit current small bore frames

so you get the GAP Glocks w/ near single stack capacity (the full sizes will hold only 10), which imo, one is better off w/ a G30 or stuffing the GAP into a frame size thats slightly larger than the small bores to properly accomidate a true, max utilized double stacked mag (projected capcity i would think would be 12-13)

if some croatian company (XD), SW, even HK's USP's double stacked .45acps, and brazil's Taurus can come up w/ a frame and mag design that is smaller than the comparable big bore glocks, then i'm sure glock could have done the same

instead they tried to change the cartrige (and perhapse gamble that it would catch on like the .40sw--which is why XD 1st came out w/ its own GAP instead of a .45acp?), and i think that it lost the gamble that it would catch on in the US market, esp since everyone else introduced smaller framed double stacked /45acps and THEN glock decides to come out w/ the G21SF and play catch-up

as to the .40sw catching on, i believe that is simply b/c it properly filled that niche that was present (something that was between the .,45acp and 9mm diameter wise, that was "more powerful" than 9mm but double stacked capable w/ current firearms and not recoil overbearing like the parent 10mm)
i dont think that .45gap fills anything, even w/ the arguments that it fills that niche where a .45 bullet fits into small bore frames...it does, but lacks the capacity of 9mm/.40sw, yet is higher pressured and same capacity as .45acp; .40sw already fills that niche for the community

i'll give it time; but the gap is going to fade away (esp in the US...it may survive overseas where mil calibers arent allowed, but i dont believe the market for it is strong enough there even) imo, simply b/c "it is a caliber that is a solution looking for a problem..."

imo, ammo will cont to be made (but it will still be expensive and harder to find), but i see it going out of the general cartrige community like the .38super, .50AE, etc

just my .02cents

BushSniper: congrats on the new glock!
i'd stock the ammo and mags and start reloading (if there are components) to ensure you have the ammo available for whenever

I traded a HK USP Compact 45 for my Glock 38, so the round count for me was a non-issue. I liked the feel of a 19 sized pistol shooting a 45 caliber bullet. I can shoot my 19 and get pretty much the same feel as the 38.

if some croatian company (XD), SW, even HK's USP's double stacked .45acps, and brazil's Taurus can come up w/ a frame and mag design that is smaller than the comparable big bore glocks, then i'm sure glock could have done the same

I agree. When the 21SF hype hit the street, I was all sorts of excited, thinking Glock had finally done it right. When I got to see my first one in person, I was not impressed at all. It seems like the 45GAPs even have a little thinner slide, but that might just be the bevel job, I haven't compared a GAP and ACP side by side, but the slides at least seem a bit thinner on the GAPs. Now my M&P 45, there is living proof that Glock should have done more to "fix" the size issue of the 21, and I bet they give Glock a run for the money with it.

instead they tried to change the cartrige (and perhapse gamble that it would catch on like the .40sw--which is why XD 1st came out w/ its own GAP instead of a .45acp?), and i think that it lost the gamble that it would catch on in the US market, esp since everyone else introduced smaller framed double stacked /45acps and THEN glock decides to come out w/ the G21SF and play catch-up

It seems kind of funny to me how people ( not saying you ) are so slow to welcome a cartridge like the GAP or even the 40 S&W when it came out, but everyone seems to get so excited when a new short mag rifle hits the shelves. I guess Glock may have followed that line of thought. For example, Winchester introduces the WSM line, allowing shooters to use a short action rifle, but not offering a huge improvement over what one of the old long magnums provided. If you take the same weight bullet and deliver it at or near the same velocity, what difference does it make whether it comes from a .30-06 or a .308 Win? What about a .300 Win Mag vs a .300 WSM? Now Glock comes along and offers a 45 "Short" providing very similar ballistics in a smaller pistol that is easier for a lot of shooters to hold im comparison to the 21 / 21SF, and it is blasphemy, an answer to a question no one asked and that sort of thing. I wish I had a dollar for every time I have said I wished I could get a .45 ACP in a Glock 19 sized pistol over the years. Of course the preference would have been for Glock to figure out a way to get the .45 ACP into the 19 sized platform, but they didn't. I have had the HKs and don't care for the cost of accessories and magazines. The XD I didn't care for the high bore axis and the safeties. Like I said above, Smith definitely got the M&P right, at least in my opinion.

as to the .40sw catching on, i believe that is simply b/c it properly filled that niche that was present (something that was between the .,45acp and 9mm diameter wise, that was "more powerful" than 9mm but double stacked capable w/ current firearms and not recoil overbearing like the parent 10mm)

I see your point there, I guess the 40 was a compromise, where as the GAP is just a different 45 caliber.

I hope not, and if Glock has to give away enough pistols to keep it around, let's hope they do. The more evil guns for people like us, the better. If for no other reason than to keep the Schumers and Feinsteins of the world panties all bunched up.

Shooting factory Speer 200gr Gold Dots out of my 38 is very manageable. If I was blindfolded and handed either my 38 or my 19 with the 124gr Gold Dots ( non +P ), I don't know that I would be able to tell the difference. The 38 is a sweetheart of a pistol, very easy to control.

The .45 GAP is getting really poplular here  in NY.  The NYSP have adopted it and many smaller departments are now trying it out.  I picked up a G38 a few months ago to try it out.  I really like it.  I think the ammo will remain expensive because lets face it, all ammo will now remain expensive, but I really don't think it will die.  However, the best handgun is still the G19 no question.

45 GAP will never last IMO.
