So I told my wife i want a GLOCK. Cut out the pic from a Guns & Ammo mag (she thinks I'm nuts but it's all about visualization for me) and have started the GLOCK fund. Selling things on eBay, etc. Lemonade stands, you name it. First off let me say I simply WANT a GLOCK. I've got a CZP-01 and it's a beautiful and fine pistol. Not a thing wrong with it. I absolutely love it. I just really WANT a GLOCK. I have for a while and have decided that I'll start with the G17. If it's been the go to pistol for so many for so long, why not me? So I started going to local shops to both price and handle the GLOCK. With so many people talking about the grip, I wanted to make sure that it would fit me. It does, it feels great and I don't have an issue with it. I have noticed though, that each shop I go to, when I ask for the GLOCK, they always hand me the GLOCK and then the XD. It's seriously each and every time, I am asked "Have you considered the XD?" I'm wondering, is this just coincidence, etc? As a matter of fact, I have considered it, but one of the reasons I want a GLOCK is because of it's undisputed reliability, everyone knows that if you have a GLOCK, it will go bang. I don't have any worried with the GLOCK in mind. So I guess my question is, has this happened to you when and if you asked to look at a GLOCK? This isn't an XD vs. GLOCK thread because I've already made up my mind, I just gotta get my wallet to agree. But if you have thoughts, insight, etc. Please share. THanks! |

You will be happy with the G17. If you want to CCW it, consider the G19. (CCW permits are so easy to get in OR, there is really no reason not to have one.) That gun will last longer than you will. The gun stores may be getting a better profit on the XD, or they want to make sure you are getting exposed to a variety of guns, which is not a bad thing I guess. I've handled and shot the XD, and it was okay. I've shot glocks for so long that any other gun feels strange to me. Kind of like drinking nothing but Starbucks, pretty soon any coffee that isn't Starbucks tastes like crap, even if it is good. Consequently, I am an unabashed Glock fan almost to the exclusion of all else. The cool thing about Glocks is the accessories. You'll eventually want to get an Advantage Arms .22 conversion and 33 round mags. You can also get a Mech-Tech carbine upper or a Kel-Tec SUB 2000 to match you mags. These carbines are fun as hell to shoot. Glocks are also easy to tinker with and upgrade parts on, but I run mine bone stock. |
It always amazes me when I see someone with so many Glocks. I just can't imagine having that many. Well, I can imagine, I think it'll just take me a while. I noticed you have a 21sf, that's the 2nd model I'm very interested in. A friend of mine just bought one and he loved it! PS. CCW is up and coming, but I want to be able to say "oh honey, now that we got our CCW's, we're both going to need new guns!". HA! See, I'm thinking ahead.... |
Because the G19 will do everything a 17 does, and conceals better.
Notes from my journey to Glockland... XD vs Glock: The thing (besides the grip angle) that convinced me NOT to get an XD was the fact that you MUST have the grip safety engaged to cycle the slide. One handed manipulations are now teh suck, if not flat-out impossible. The bore axis is like ten feet above the slide, which increases perceived recoil. It rusts if you look at it and think about humidity. Many folks will also tell you to look at the Smith M&P... M&P vs Glock: I was one of the fortunate few to get my hands on the .40 version that Glenn_R had a while back (pre-release by S&W, sent to Police Depts for T&E). At 5k rounds, there were pins walking out, the barrel was peening the locking piece, and the slide stop seemed to have lost all tension (i.e. folks were activating it, or preventing it from activation simply by getting near it - not hard to do with a high thumbs grip). Add in the mag-disconnect safety, and getting an M&P became a non-starter. It seems that S&W has corrected some of these issues during production, but I still prefer the ergonomics of the Glock. Since we're doing comparisons... Walther P99/ Smith SW099 vs Glock: This is the only contender, as far as I'm concerned. It has great ergonomics, and the the "QA" trigger is okay. Mags and holsters are hard to find/expensive, and I prefer the old style mag release, but the biggest drawback is that it's not a Glock. ![]() 1911 vs. Glock (yes, I'm going there): I will start by saying that I am a 1911 guy. The design is pure sex, dead nuts accurate AND reliable when built to the right (read: JMB's original) specs, with the ability to have the single-best trigger pull of ANY pistol ever made. I love 1911s. Unfortunately, 1911s don't love me. The grip angle just plain doesn't work with my geometry. It's not a training thing, as I spent 2 years putting ~10k rounds downrange under the tutelage of a VERY good pistol instructor...after ignoring his advice to get a Glock. It took frame-by-frame video analysis of my shooting to convince me that the 1911 didn't work for me, which put me in the same place where you're at. I didn't want to buy a Glock (they're ugly bricks with a creepy trigger and bad sights), and explored the possibilities above. I bought the Glock, replaced the sights, and learned to exploit the trigger. Dirty, wet, dry, filled with bellybutton lint, soaked with sweat, and caked with the little flakes of deodorant that have fallen from your armpits you can still draw, fire, and repeat until the mag is empty. It is the epitome of a no BS combat pistol, whose ergonomics work for everyone who picks it up. You may not like it, but it will still do the job better than anything else out there, and in the harshest of conditions. As far as what you should buy, and how you should carry it: The question is asked so often here on Arf that my opinion is stated in my sigline.

The 21SF is sweet Originally the only pistols I had were 1911's. I love the .45acp round and reload for it. Now my other .45's include the 2 XD's and the Glock 36 and 21SF. "It always amazes me when I see someone with so many Glocks. I just can't imagine having that many. Well, I can imagine, I think it'll just take me a while. " well I've been "collecting" and shooting for many years, didn't get hese all at once Mike |
For some of us it's a numerical progression thing. I have a G20 G21 G22 G23 and am working on...................................................you guessed it, a G24 I have other pistols, I just like the Glocks the best for the purpose I bought them for; to have fun with. |
This is worth repeating... I know a lot of guys that are absolutely disgusted by the fact that they shoot that ugly pistol better than any other thing in the safe. |
I purchased my second GLOCK less than 3 months after the first. I am good for the time being, I am saving my pennies for an upper |
