I just picked up a used G19 for the wife - and discovered a unusual issue (for me at least) shortly thereafter.  The mag release is mind-numbingly difficult to use.  I have to push unbelievably hard to get it to release the mag.  (No, I am not pushing it against my forefinger on the other side.  Even if I release the entire right side of the area and man-handle it it's a beast to release the mag.)

Can the mag release mechanism be replaced?  I am a bit of a technical retard and couldn't do it myself.  I don't really see the need for an extended mag release - I think there's somethging messed up internally.

Finally - yes, it's the stock mag release (or at least it hasn't been ground down/shaved or otherwise visibly doctored).

Anyone have a thought on what it could be?

The mag catch is very easy to remove and reinstall.  The only thing I can suggest is that the wire spring that secures the catch might not be fully seated.  Perhaps the catch was removed and reinstalled by someone and the spring was not installed completely.  If you look at the mechanism, it's pretty self-explanatory, but, if you aren't comfortable taking it apart, find a Glock armorer in your area to take a look at it.

+1 that if you don't feel confident enough to replace the mag catch or spring that you should find the nearest Glock armorer in your state. You can go to http://www.glockmeister.com and look for the heading at top left that says map of "U.S. Glock armorers". Good luck, hope you get it running right. I'd say to talk to Ben, but he may be a little busy right now.
