I've been trying to decide which model I should buy, the 17 or 19, but I just can't make a decision.   It's going to be my carry gun.  Noone around here offers concealed carry classes, so I have to ask questions here.  I'm a fairly slim guy,  6' with a 36" waiste.

Is there really that big of a difference between carrying a model 17 vs. the model 19?

You may be able to shoot a bit tighter groups with the 17, but the 19 is much more concealable, and a bit lighter.

Buy them all:

Well, a little perspective for you, I'm 5'9' with a 32" waist, and I carry a 17.  I think either of the two choices will work for you, sooooo get what you like best.

How's the recoil on the 19 compared to the 17?

Owning both (ARFCOM tradition)

I prefer the 19.  Just seems to feel better to me.

Ditto for my dad, for he prefers the 19 and was the one that sold me my 17.

Both area accurate, easy to conceal, and easy to fire. For some people, the 19 has less muzzle rise than the 17. I have both and carry both. The 17 for most everyday general carry, the 19 when I am dressed up. Try them both and see which one feels best in your hand.

I have a 17 and love it. I am soon to get my CCW here and would like a good IWB carry holster, any recomendations?

For carrying concealed?

The 19.  Period.

Carry a spare 17 round mag on your hip like me.

And carry it in a Comp-Tac C-TAC holster like me as well...on a Wilderness 5-stitch belt.  I wouldn't change my setup at all.

I own both. The 19 does all the 17 will....in a smaller package.

I own both and carried both.  I'm close to you as far as size, and I'd recommend a 19.  I've carried the 17 before in an OWB holster and the grip sticks a bit out compared to the 19.   Granted the type of holster does make a diff. but I'd still prefer the 19 for everyday carry.

As someone already mentioned, the 19 does everything the 17 can do in a smaller package.   To me I can't really tell any diff. in recoil, heck they're 9mm.  Having shot both competitively in IDPA and tac handgun courses, I'm much faster with the 19.  As far as accuracy goes, I can't tell any diff.    They both great guns, and eventually you'll get both.

I have a 17, 19 and a 26. I shoot the 19 better than the other two and prefer to carry the 19 as the 17 gets in the way of my belly and the 26 is slower to draw from an inside the waistband rig. Buy the 19, It would be the gun I would choose if I could only own one handgun for the rest of my life. Like someone else said, get the 17 mags for backups.

I just got my Glock 19 after asking the same question here.  I'm a smaller framed guy and it conceals perfectly on me.

My thread on this question

Thought this might help.  The G19 was voted best all around for a concealable handgun with fullsize features 201 to 70 compared to the Glock 17.  If you can't get both, get the G19.  Hell, I'm going to get a police trade-in G19 for my wife next chance I get.  She'll get a Gen 2 because the lack of grooves will be better for her smaller hands.

+1 on the G17 mags.  When I get the money for some mags I'm going to stock up on an assload of G17 and G18 mags.

Great choice!  I just got mine a couple of weeks ago and I can all ready tell you that you won't be 0.00001% disappointed!  The upgrades I'm looking toward making will only be a bonus on what I consider a fantastic and still 100% acceptable weapon.

My list of upgrades include:
-Full stainless guide rod with captive stainless spring
-Extended slide release
-Some sort of night sights (probably ghost ring style)
-A light or laser or combo
-Maybe a 3.5 lb. transfer bar and trial how it feels

get the 23! Same size frame but it makes a bigger hole!

Sorry...couldn't resist. I have both the 19 and the 23 and love them both equally (you gotta say that to keep one from getting jealous of the other)

You really should get both though....its the ARFCOM way!

+1 on the G19

I too shoot better with the G17, but not better enough to justify the concealability I'd loose.

I'm partial to the full size myself, it's what I've got right now (22) and likely what I'll be carrying when I get back to the States (31).

The mid-size seem to be good guns, but the finger grooves are uncomfortable as fuck to me on that one. I figure I'll buy a 32 one of these days and grind the grooves off, but I don't think you're giving up that much concealability with the full size.

My G19 (2nd Gen) is the 1st firearm I ever purchased way back in 1992. Today I still have this pistol, and have fired thousands upon thousands of rounds through her with zero malfunctions. I have fired just about every conceivable configuration/bullet type in the 9x19 cartridge through this pistol with no problems whatsoever. I have the option of carrying many different firearms in different calibers (9mm,.40S&W,.45ACP,.357Mag) but I keep coming back to the G19. I carry this pistol almost everyday, and am amazed at how well the finish has held up even though it has been presented from the holster thousands of times, and been sweated on by me more times than I can count. This pistol has been thorough several schools of professional training, which have required 1500+ rounds or more per weekend with little to no attention in regards to maintenance during that time.

I have no problems with the 9mm round. I use Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P as my exclusive carry round.

The modifications I have made to my G19 are as follows:
1) Trijicon sights
2) Smooth trigger
3) 3.5lb factory connector
4) 8lb trigger spring
5) Extended slide release
6) Grip tape

I only wish GLOCK would make a G19 sized frame with a G17 sized upper...to me that would be the ultimate 9mm.

Just FYI, Robar (and others) will convert the frame of your G17 to create just the pistol you are describing.

My boss just had this same dilema. He went with the 19 due to it being smaller, but after he had to complete his OPOTA training course with it, he wishes he would have got the 17. He kept pinching the heel of his hand when he slammed a new mag in the 19 because he has big hands.

What I am saying, as long as you are big enough to conceal the larger gun, and a 6" guy with a 36" waiste should be able to conceal a 17, then get the gun that best fits your hand. If it is the 17, then get it, if it is the 19 then get it, make sure the gun fits you and your hand first. Then worry about concealing it later.

Why not a 36? It's smaller than a 19 and is a real fight stopper.

That was my "problem". Big hands. The 19 fits like shit. Of course when I bought the G17 in 1986 there was no choice. He could buy a 19 and put a mag well on it If the grip is not long enough.

Well, today I just got back from the gunshow and a G19 followed me home.  Now I just need to get a holster and plenty of range time.

The 17 felt a little better in my hands, but it wasn't a big difference.  For concealability I went with the 19.

Glock 19 is the best of both worlds...I know because I just got one and love it!  9mm is a great stopping round and after the ballistics gel testing that I've seen compared to .40 and .45, it is much more comparable than you'd think.  I repeat, ballistics gel TESTING, not speculation and assumptions.

I think quite highly of the comptac ctac for concealed carry. I've gone through a half dozen holsters, and the ctac is the best of the bunch by far.

I have a bunch of cheap holsters. Learned the hard way that I should have bought right the first time. Spending now for a quality holster and a quality belt will really save ya a lot of grief.

If you happen to be a leftie, I can send some of my previous attempts your way.

I have used their shirt tucker for 3 years and got along great with it. Don't leave it in a hot car though. I did and it relaxed a little. They replaced it no questions asked.

A friend just got a 36 and he is going to try the CTAC, I am anxious to give it a try. He asked about a nine as well. I told him I didn't trust anything that doesn't start with a 4 But it all boils down to what you train with and what you are proficient with. The nine with a good bullet should be fine for your mother-n-law.
