I currently carry an HK USPc45. I like it a lot and I'm very proficient with it. In December I purchased a G19 for my 11 year old daughter (Christmas present) and have subsequently spent a fair amount of time pulling it's trigger. I also took the Glock Armorers class which increased my appreciation for Glocks. In the last week, I've been mulling over selling the USPc and picking up something different. Right now it's a toss up between an S&W MP 40, a G22 and a G17. The G22/G17 is starting to feel really good in my hands. I can really shoot my daughter's G19 very well. The gun will primarily be for self defense as well as general defensive skills training. What are the opinions of the G22 vs the G17? Ohhhh and yes I know the G22 is 40 SW and the G17 is 9mm Bomber |

I'd go with a 22 over a 17, if it were me. The first thing I noticed about a friend's 22 when I tried it out was how little muzzle flip there was, and the recoil itself felt more like a 9mm than a 40S&W. Gotta be the combination of low bore axis & grip angle, but whatever it is, it makes for a surprisingly gentle-shooting gun, considering the cartridge. ETA: You can also get an Advantage Arms .22 conversion kit for it for right around $250, and shoot all day long for cheap practice. |

The 40 will have greater muzzle flip than the 9mm, and plinking ammo is slightly more expensive. If you like the idea of having the extra umph of the 40 for defense go with the Glock 22. I have a Lone Wolf drop-in conversion barrel for my G 22 so I can shoot the (cheaper) 9mm at the range and still carry the 40 for defense. FWIW the Conversion barrel was only $89 + a few G 17 mags for reliable feeding. It's the inexpensive way to have both pistols. |
+1 Also, most cops are issued G22's. By the way, isn't a 11 year old too young to own gun...I think it's illegal. |
Guns are often bought with the understanding that the kid will take possesion of it when they are of legal age. For all intents and purposes it is "their" gun to use when they go to the range with Mom and Dad. I say go for the Glock 17, but you can't go wrong with the Glock 22. |
Exactly......hard to believe that required explaination. I didn;t think of the conversion angle......mmmmm Bomber |

Bomber, if you sell the HK compact you might just have enough money to stay in true ARFCOM Fashion.... GET BOTH Seriously, You have to look at what ammo cost is for the two. The converions are a way to have the multi-caliber in the One Package. You won't go wrong with either one. Good Luck with your choice. |
Psst, hey man. Keep it down. Let's just get Mr. Thebomber into a Glock. After his first one he will need to...........well you know. We should make the switch as easy as possible, remember he is, ah I mean was, an HK guy. |
