Just bought my first Glock 17 today. It's a 1st gen serial no. ASH 8XX US. Paid $400. It was owned by a local JP. It's in mint condition. I shot it today and fell in love. To me, sig's and berettas was the only way to go but now I'm sold on Glocks. Did I get a good deal and is this a solid pistol? Should I keep a round in the chamber or just rack the slide? I plan to keep it in a place but if someone not familiar it were to to run across it with a round in the chamber???

Yes that's an okay price in my opinion. They are VERY solid pistols. Don't listen to the tales of the Glocks "kaBooming" don't shoot lead bullets through it and don't use crappy reloads and you will wear out your trigger finger before you wear out a Glock.

I'm not sure what you mean about a round in the chamber. If you are carrying the pistol on you you should have a round chambered and the pistol in a holster that covers the trigger area. If you are storing it somewhere that other people have access to it should be locked up whether there is a round in a chamber or not. Someone who find the gun could still work the action and cause a tragedy. There are numerous pistol safes on the market, some of which have doors that pop open very quickly in an emergency.

They are fun, aren't they? I have several Glocks, but a model 19 (smaller version of your 17) is the first 9 I bought recently. Very enjoyable shooting and I have always liked the model 17. The only thing I would ever change on a Glock are the sights, I recently put Trijicon night sights on one of mine and like them a great deal. Most defensive shooting occur in poor light and the trijicons are tougher than the crappy glock plastic sights (which I have damaged by dropping an unloaded Glock on a wood floor).

My bud has nothing but Glocks after having Colts...

I have nothing but Colts after having Glocks...

They are reliable and very usable handguns and I've heard it described as:  "like shooting a squirt gun" because it is so easy to use.

One thing:  Mexican or crotch ready carry with a round in the chamber of a Glock can spoil you whole day IF you inadvertantly pull the trigger while drawing the gun.

A few years ago a weed and seed undercover troop here had a few extra holes added to his anatomy in the crotch area when one of his comrades was frisking him for show and pulled the safe trigger as he removed his concealed firearm.

Not a big deal just requires a slight change in the rules of carry (as all individual arms do)

Is it a solid pistol? Lessee now, the pistol is good for 250,000 rounds, then you send it to the smith or the factory for a rebuild and it is good for another 200,000. That is 450 cases of ammo, and those numbers are conservative. Shooting 250 rounds a month it would be good for 1800 months or roughly 150 YEARS. You could hand that down to your great great great great great grandson to carry  against invaders from Proxima Centauri.

I'm used to safeties and double action. The simplicity of this gun just scared me. I'll work past that. Nothing but Glocks for me. Thanks

Anybody who has a problem with the Glock Safe Action trigger system should also have a problem with revolvers. I always explain the safety as one of "KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER, STUPID!"

Simplicty. This Glock is the perfect pistol. I can see now why it took the gun world by storm when it first came out. Is it still as popular today as it was then?

Gunmonkey, while I agree with you about the need for keeping the finger off of the trigger, I disagree about the Glock/revolver analogy.  A revolver has a trigger pull in the 10 to 14 pound range; a Glock has what, a 5-pound stock trigger pull?  Glocks are great guns, but IMHO they are lousy guns for inexperienced shooters.  The simplicity of the Glock is both a blessing and a curse.

Buz_b, Glocks are not perfect pistols...until you put on the night sights, then they are!  Glock on.

This pistol has an adustable rear sight. What sights are you referring to? I love like it is, but it can be better I want it.

Buz.b, There are lots of night sights out there.  The ones I have on Glock 23 are Tru Dot.  The reason I like them is that the night sights are set within large white circles so they approximate the combat-style white three-dot sights.   Other night sights I looked at didn't have this feature, which meant in the day the sights were more black on black.

I have had them for about seven years now and they still glow brightly.  Trijicon, Heinie, and Ashley all make night sights.  My sights are all green, some people like a different color for the front sight.

Enjoy the Glock.

I'm not going rush out and cash in my p226 and 92fs just yet. But I think I've found something better. As Gunmonkey reminded me,in the end, there's only one real safety  on any weapon system. Since reading his response, each time I pick up this gun it is with trigger finger rigidly extended alongside the trigger guard, unless there a reason for it to be inside. Keep in mind, my experience with the Glock is only two days old, but I'm learning at a geometric rate thanks to this website and forum.

Flinterfan, thanks for the info. Where can I find the tru dot sights? About what can I expect to pay for the sights and installation???

Buz_b,
I think Meprolight makes Tru Dot sights, but it's been awhile.  When I bought my Glock 23 I had the gun shop put them on the same day.  The sights cost $125 (this was circa '96 or '97).  As I had bought enough guns there for them to name a new wing after me, the shop put them on for free.

Any good independent gun shop should have them in stock or can order them for you.  You might try sleuthing the 'net.

Anybody else out there know who makes these sights?  I looked on my Glock and the sights themselves just say Tru Dot on the right rear sight.
