Last night I disassembled the slide in my G17. It came apart and went together just fine.  But when I tested fired it I noticed the firing pin was still protruding through the firing pin hole in the slide.  I kept playing with it and found that if the barrel is pointed upward the pin will retract but if it is pointed downward it protrudes.  It takes very little force to push it back in.  So there is no way it could slam fire.  The issue seems to be the firing pin safety is holding the firing pin in place.

Is this normal?

ETA: Nevermind. I did a google with the word "protruding" and found this on Glock Talk. It is normal.  I searched last night but used other terms.

that's normal. my older G22 does it, my brand new G22 does it, as well as the G21, G17 and G32

BTW, in a Glock the term would be "striker". A Glock doesn't have a firing pin.

Actually, it is called a firing pin.  It just fires on the striker principal, as opposed to being hammer struck.
