So my buddy got this used Gen 3 17 and the trigger is quite excellent on it. High round count and a 2 or 3lb Zev striker spring. It has a factory trigger spring, factory connector, and factory striker.

I thought this combo was supposed to be unreliable? Between the two of us we have over 1k through this 17 with 100% reliability. At least 6 different types of ammo, probably more like 8-10.

I told him I'm not sure I'd trust it for carry or defensive use but it HAS shot everything 100% including his and my carry ammo.

Thoughts?

Try Russian steel ammo.....

I personally do not like the feel of the trigger with the lighter striker spring I have tried it a few times but never liked it.  To each his own.

Will do.

The trigger is pretty mushy but it is super smooth and easy to shoot well.[sub][/sub]

Tulammo BrassMaxx IIRC made mine choke occasionally with a 4lb striker spring as would the occasional high primer in a reload.
I like the lower pull weight, and Tulammo was never a staple of mine, but it did not reliably reset the trigger far enough forward for the trigger safety to function, so production illegal, OEM back in no problems.

My 17 has over 10k with a similar setup. With only three malfunctions all were mag related. My setup is agency trigger, wotg special spring, maritime cups, zev extended striker, zev v4 connector, zev fps, stock trigger spring. This summer I shot 1200-1400 rounds with my 17 and this setup at frank proctors combat pistol class in 8 hours, had zero malfunctions and didn't clean on lunch break.

1K rounds isn't a particularly large sample size with which to judge reliability.

You just need to understand that light springs will shrink your margin of error for malfunctions.  For a race gun, that's a trade a lot of us are willing to make for a better trigger.

I'm running a 3lb striker spring in my G35 as well as the extra power trigger return spring
The trigger return spring was causing bad resets so I went back to the factory return spring. Problem solved.

I run the 2 # with zev's extended striker, never had an issue.
