Looking to go fiber optic for the first time on a new Glock, and have a question. Which of the popular brands shoot POA-POI? From my personal experience, stock Glock sights have a 6 oclock hold which I do not like, so I run Trij HDs on my carry guns. With the HDs I cover up where I want to hit, and that's where the impact is.
Which brands in your experience are POA-POI for FO? Im currently considering the WOTG square notches, thanks for any input you can offer. TLDR - I do NOT want a 6 oclock hold sight picture

TLDR - I do NOT want a 6 oclock hold sight picture ![]() Some sights are POA POI but at some ranges you have to use the 6 o'clock hold and at some you have to cover. I have Wilson Combat Vickers on my G17 up close I have to 6 o'clock hold but at 10m out I have to cover and beyond 25 I have to 12 o'clock hold. It really depends on what distance you are shooting with most sights. |

I like the Warrens on my G17, however somewhere between 0 and 25 the POI moves about 2-3" above the sights with heavy bullets (147-155gr) moving slow.
For USPSA and drills it's fine, my preference is right on top of the blade at 25, but I much prefer a slightly high POI to driving the dot or whatever that BS hold is that obscures the POA and/or whole target at distance. |
|
I agree with alpha- having to cover your target with the sights to shoot to where the dot is is not acceptable to me either. Not saying some people don't like it that way.
I have been brainwashed on focusing on equal height and light pistol sight pictures for close to 40 years now, and have seen tons of people shoot high or low because they focus on the dots instead of the sights. The dots ( fiber paint tritium) are there to aid in very close up flash sight alignment, and once accuracy is required the answer is to align the sights and ignore the dots. At what distance and target size this will be required is going to be different for everyone. |

Dawson uses a .205 front with a .225 rear, so .020 difference height wise.
The rest of the industry uses a .215 front with a .250 rear, so the difference is .035 height wise. Note that the rest of the industry also offers taller front sights in the .23x or even .25x range. One of those companies guarantees their sights will give you proper POA/POI, so I generally use that as my clue; they back that up with a free replacement front if needed. I have found that many glocks with a .250 rear require a taller front sight to get proper POI/POA. Its not uncommon for me to toss a .225-.235 front sight on a Glock with a .250 rear, and virtually every 34/35 I've sighted in required a .240-.245. Usually .215 is too short with a .250, especially if you shoot heavier ammo. |

I agree at distance/up close there will always be a slight holdover, but in middle distances I prefer a poa-poi. Sounds like ill be checking out the Dawsons. I appreciate all the advice. |

Buy a set of Dawson sights. If they don't shoot to the POI that you want call them up and they'll send you a new front sight for free! I've used their perfect impact policy before and it was very easy to get the new front sight from them.
Also FYI, POI at the top of the front sight like you're describing isn't a 6 o'clock hold (#2 below). #1 is a 6 o'clock hold.

From my experience, my HDs are a #3 sight picture on the chart, and that's what id like to have with the FOs as well. |

I don't know of any fiber optic sights that will give you a guaranteed #3 sight picture. Most people shooting fiber optic sights, at least from my experience, want a #2 so that's what most sights are designed for. But buy a set from Dawson (buy the complete Dawson set or whatever front sight height they recommend on their site for the given rear sight you choose or else they won't honor their perfect impact policy). I highly doubt it will shoot to #3 since it's designed to shoot to #2, but try that set aiming with the POA you like and measure how off the POI is. Then call Dawson and they'll give you a new front sight for free getting you to the #3 sight picture you want. Yes it's a bit of a hassle. I called them before ordering sights for a 24. I told them there's no way the normal sight height they recommend will work for a 24, but they said their policy is to try their recommended height first. Sure enough, it shot high. So I called them and got a new front sight for free. Seems like a hassle, but it's still a lot easier than any other manufacturer since I don't know anyone else that will guarantee you get the POA/POI you want for free. |
