So I just got my glock set up with a trijicon rmr (rm08g) in a zev slide and love it. The only problem is that when I clean the slide, it's hard to not get any cleaning solvent splattered on the lens. Do you guys have any tricks for protecting the lenses while cleaning?

Thanks

I always put a piece of clear scotch tape over the lens. Works great!

People who want to depend on them.

No matter what you have read on the internet, it doesn't make you cool to have a dirty Glock. I'm not pointing my finger at you specifically Remydog, just saying in general.

I seriously think some guys intentionally abuse and neglect cleaning their pistols just so they can try to show everybody how Tier 1 they are.

In fact, during our qualifications our range master will do a basic inspection and function check of our pistols, if they are unreasonably dirty we could be pulled out until our pistol is presented clean and ready for service.

ETA- sorry I'm not addressing the RMR specifically Im sure trying to keep an RMR clean is a pain in the ass...hell my weapon lights are difficult to keep the lenses clean. The tape is a good idea.

Of course they do.......people actually pay money for "battleworn" cerakote.

It's a lifesaving piece of equipment. Keep it clean. At my LE agency, if you have an unreasonably dirty weapon, you'll be written up and/or suspended.

it was said with sarcasm.
I agree with what has been said in the above post. All my guns look like safe queens even my EDC, the only wear on it is on the mag release.

I just wipe the lens off with an old t shirt when I'm done. After a couple years a little CLP here and there hasn't caused a problem.

I use Chapstick on my lights, if shooting in daylight. Cleans off real fast and clean. No experience w rmr yet

Don't have an RMR on a pistol (yet).

I do have lights.  I use the same oily rag I used to wipe off the outside surfaces of the pistols to wipe down the light and lens.  I'm wondering if a light coat of oil helps catch/hold the powder residue for a time.  My streamlight is getting burnt on top of the metal ring that holds the lens in place.  That happened on the .357 SIG M&P 9.  Fireballs man.

I don't know if the same thing would work for the RMR, or it would hurt the lens, or make the image foggy/smeared or what.

I appreciate the input. I'm pretty ocd at keeping my weapons clean. Especially my defensive weapons.

I can't believe I didn't think of using tape. I really like that idea.

The scopecoat is good, just expensive for only cleaning. The jellyfish lists that it doesn't fit my model.

Thanks very much for all the quick responses.

I use a standard pink pencil eraser for my light lenses. As soon as I pick up my red dot I'll let you know how it works.

I use one of those LensPens as recommended by trijicon, but it doesn't do a good job to be honest. Ive been afraid to use other things because I don't know what kind of finish coating is on the lens and I don't want to use anything that may eat it off.

I use good ol soap and water,  well I have only had it about a week but I think it will be fine,  I let it air dry then I used my cloth that came with my new glasses,  I figure it must have something on it to protect it from brass hitting it so soap (dawn) should not hurt the coating.

FYI

You should be cleaning the breech face holding the slide facing down to prevent solvent from getting into the firing pin channel

I use the strike industries jellyfish cover to keep mine safe when not in use. It's easy to pop off as well when you need to.
