First off, I have always had a thing for the Gen 2 19's and I can't seem to get them out of my head.
I carry a Gen 4 19 currently and I do love the gun, but for whatever reason I'm curious on the advantages grip wise of the Gen 2. I'm looking for people who have ownered either a Gen3/4 and the Gen 2 and I would like to hear your thoughts on advantages of dissantvantages. Thanks! |

G17.2, G19.4, and a G34.3 The biggest difference is it has no finger grooves and is more slippy than the Gen4 but basically feels like a 3 with no finger grooves. |

I had a Gen 2 G19, and a Gen 3 G23.
The Gen 2 compact frame w/o the finger grooves feels too small in my hand. The Gen 3 w/ finger grooves felt a lot better -- I just didn't like .40SW in that package. I prefer the full sized Glocks for range use, and I carry a G26, but I will probably grab a used Gen 3 or 4 G19 next time I see one for a good price. |
| I have a Gen 2 and Gen 3 Glock 19. Wouldn't call the grip on Gen 2's slippery, as I've never dropped one even though I shoot without gloves. That being said, you'll see plenty of people shaving the finger grooves on their Gen 3/4's to match the grip feel of the 2's. That being said, the factory "stippling" or grip material pattern gets more aggressive with each generation. I think it's purely personal preference as I like the feel of both in the hand. Gen 2 appeal is more of a nostalgia I believe before every closet GI Joe felt a light rail was needed to make a gun tactically effective. Simply, if you think you may want a light, get a Gen 3/4. If not, any will be just fine and fun at that. After all, you'll be shooting a Glock. |

I have a Gen4 26 and recently picked up an Aim Surplus Gen 2 19 and shot it this past Monday.
Love the Gen4 pebbling on the grip. Taking into consideration that the Gen2 is a used 21 year old gun, the grip is slick. I may need to stipple or grip tape it if I'm going to keep it. My PPQ feels slick too, even with the rubber Talon grips. May try the granulated version. Love the thumb indentation and lip on the Gen4. I found my thumb wandering around a little on the Gen2 without the "help" like on the Gen4. Gen4 feels less board-like with the thumb groove/lip. Like the magazine release on the Gen4 with its bigger surface area, even with its stock height/depth in the grip. The Gen2 is much, much smaller. I suppose there could be a little work hardening of the spring in this old gun, but it seems to need a little more umph to push. That could just be the smaller surface area button feeling more, "thorny" to my thumb. Instead of the Vickers rounded release ($17), I went with a $4 Glock, knowing most people think it's too tall. Well, I can round the edges to match the Vickers and cut it down if needed to Vickers height. It sticks out far enough that without the groove for my thumb, I found my thumb banging off the mag release unitl I started forcing myself not to. I'll take it back out this weekend to shorten/reprofile it. Might even end up putting the stock one back in, but I'll put a notch around it with a dremel before I do. I hate, HATE, the notch at the bottom of the front of the grip on the Gen2. If I had not been able to find a solution (Link) I would have already sold it. This may not be a problem for some, but my hands are larger than normal and my pinky finger ends up laying across that hole. Those edges are sharp and even if I'd beveled the edge, it would still have been uncomfortable. The grip feels small enough in my hands, that the first mag I ran through it felt super odd until I realized I had been hooking my pinky under the mag, just like on the 26. Have to force myself to grip it right, LOL. But I love the compactness of the 19 in general. So, a learning/adjustment point for me. I like the no finger grooves on the Gen2. I tolerate them on the Gen4 26 because I have the GAP magazine extensions which puts a hook AND effectively moves my ring finger groove down a bit. My hands do not fit the G19 finger grooves. I wanted to explore the 19/17/22 possibility, but didn't want to pay for a new one, start modding it, grinding the finger grooves off, only to find I didn't really care for it. All that being said, my reasons for this experiment was/is a BOB or truck type gun. I think with a minor tweak or two, it'll do what I want. But if I was to get silly and sell my PPQ and the 26 and go 19 for my go-to 9mm, I'd spring for a Gen4, undercut the trigger guard a little, remove half the finger ridges or remove them altogether. |
| Sir you answered my question perfectly. Thank you! I think I'm going to keep my Gen 4 and end up doing the undercut like you stated as well. I guess I see the Gen 2 as a staple gun for Glock and I have always wanted an excuse to get one. I did get an undercut on my old Gen 3 19 by glockworx and it changed the entire feel of the gun for the better. |
