Hey everyone,
about a year ago I heard about the this test you can do to see if you need to replace your recoil spring. For those not familiar with the test it is as follows:
1. Ensure gun is clear.
2. Point it straight up in the air.
3. Pull trigger and hold to the rear.
4. Retract slide and ride it slowly forward. You'll feel the point where the barrel hood starts to engage the ejection port.
5. Release the slide and allow it to finish forward travel.

If the slide goes back into battery while the Glock is pointed up with the trigger pulled, the spring is still fine.

I've done this test with two g26, one g30, g22, g17. they all passed the test except the g17 which is a gen 1 and won't pass the test with new or old recoil spring. This gun i've shot about 1k rds through so I know it works without problems.
Well today I tried it on a g19 gen 3 I bought new and only have about 2k rds through. It failed about one in every 4 times I did it. It would go fully into battery when I started to bring the gun down to a normal point when it would fail the test.

I do not subscribe to the theory that you need to change the RSA every 3-5k rounds so I'm wondering if the test it's self is valid. Case in point the above mentioned g17 and I also have a SAR-1 when I ride the charging handle it will sometimes stick but that only has about 1.5k rds through it too.

What do you all think? Is the test valid or not?
thanks

If in doubt, it's a cheap replacement.

I regard RSAs in Glocks as a consumable, thats why they're so cheap to replace.  Better to replace than risk beat up lugs and locking block.

The test is valid.  I would add slide lock spring to the list.

I have seen an early Gen3 G26 break it's slide lock spring, eject the slide lock to where we couldn't find it.

What was left?  Two front lugs that were exposed due to the slide slamming back without any resistance.

Recommended replacement interval for Gen1-3 Recoil Spring Assembly (RSA) is 2,500 rds.  Gen4 RSA is 5,000 rds.  Or as determined by the above field inspection.
