I am contemplating buying a G36 as a conceal carry gun.  Any members out there with experience on this model?  Would appreciate advice on:

- How it shoots (accurancy, recoil);
- Recommended HP ammo, including bullet weight & pressure;
- Gun price;
- General pros & cons of this gun verses a 1911 .45 ACP

Thanks for your help.

Bought a Glock 36 right after they came out.
My first 5 shots went into a hole a little bigger than a quarter.
It is comfortable and accurate.
One of my favorite Glocks!

I carry my G36 just about everywhere.
-I had a 26 too but sold it because, oddly enough, the 36 is easier to shoot for me. Snappy but light recoil. Accuracy is great for its intended purposes, I had no problem getting headshots at 20 yards with little practice.
-I carry 200gr +p Gold Dots in mine to make sure there is reliable velocity out of the "short" barrel but I imagine any reputable HP ammo in 230r would still work just fine.
-Price should be in the $500-550 for new or about $50 cheaper for gently used.
-I traded my 4" SA 1911 for mine and do not regret it. It is much lighter and comfortable to carry and is very easy to conceal since it has no obtrusions.

All things considered I wouldn't/couldn't find a better compact .45 if I tried.

Great advice, thanks you guys!

Anyone else out there with positive/negative experience with a G36?

Is is true that HPs are not really required as a defensive ammo since the relative low velocity of regular .45 ball ammo will not cause the bullet to over-penetrate?

Thanks!

Not a ballistics expert by any means but its accepted that HP's are the way to go. .45 has plenty of punch to go straight through someone, even most HP ammo gets enough penetration to go through a person no problem. Another thing I'd rather my bullet to expand to close to 3/4" rather than stay a clean .45.

I've had my G36 for a couple of years now and put hundreds of rounds through it.  I've also owned a 21, 26, 27, and 19.   The 36 is far and away my favorite.  The recoil seems much more manageable to me than the 21 or 27.  It is very accurate and has been 100% reliable so far.  I use Federal HydraShock ammo for carrying.  I'm currently looking into purchasing a 1911, and have shot 8 different ones in the last two weeks.  The 1911 is so different from the 36 that I'm only looking to add one to my collection, mainly for pleasure/target shooting.  It definitely won't replace my Glock.

Is the G36 the way to go or does anyone recommend the G30 instead?  The G30 does allow for three additional rounds, but is slighty heavier than the G36.  I would also assume that the grip on the G30 is thicker owing to the double-stack magazine.

I already own a G17 and a H&K P2000 in 9mm.  The .45 caliber seemed like a natural progression but I never liked the 1911s primarily for their complicated manual-of-arms.  I was very impressed with my G17, both for its shooting prowess, as well as its reliability.  And that is why I am leaning towards another Glock, but this time in .45

Thank you for any advice and I hope to hear your experience with either the G30 or G36.

I went with the G30 after handling the 36. The 36 felt way too small in my hand. However it is slimmer and a little easier to conceal than the G30. The muzzle flip is very controlable and have a great time shooting it, also plug in a g21 mag and it's a while till it runs dry at the range!

I own a 21 and 30 and I have shot a 36.

I would go with the 30 for carry

I bought mine to supplement my old G23 as a CCW - I was celebrating getting my FL non-res.

- It's as accurate as my G23 and my G21, which means it's more accurate than I am.
- I run 230g Gold Dots - I found my traditional 230g Hyrda-Shoks were kind of flashy with such a short barrel.
- I picked up a very nice condition used one with two mags for $400.
- It's a heck of a lot smaller and lighter than most 1911 pattern guns.  I also prefer the Glock trigger for a carry piece.

Mine is affected by the frame recall and is taking a vacation to Smyrna next week - after it's back, I have a new set of XS 24/7 Big Dots I'm going to install.  I don't want to put them on before I send it away.

Did anyone face a feeding or an extraction problem with their Speer 230g HP ammo?  My new G36 had one extraction problem with S&B 230g ball ammo.  It might have been just because the gun was so new.  I would like to carry Speer 230g HP ammo for personal defense, but am not yet convinced with its feeding/extraction reliability.  Hydra-Shoks on the other hand tend to have too much muzzle-flash and would leave my night-sights useless after the first round is fired.

I have a 30 which I really like. Accurate, easy to carry. Good ammo capacity. Very controllable. I 've never shot a 36, so I can't compare the two. I got mine used for $450.00. I carry Winchester SXT 230 HP.
