So I just got back from MDFI Foundation Handgun here in Michigan.  It's a great class and I had a lot of fun.  I also had the privilege or using one of the instructor's handguns.  He uses a Glock 17 cut down to a 19.  It has a nice trigger, great sights, custom slide and frame work, but the thing that stood out the most to me was the mod he did on the slide release.  Namely, it was gone.  There was still plenty of contact between the slide and the slide stop allowing it to hold open on an empty chamber, but there is no way to release the slide via the lever.  Many agree that slingshotting is the best way to reload a handgun (so this mod won't be for folks that use it to drop the slide) but I do actually notice myself getting higher and tighter on the gun without that lever being there.  I ran it during IDPA practice today and it was great.  Worst case: I decide to go back and I'm out $9.

How do you lock the slide to the rear to clear a double feed malfunction?

I like having the ability to lock the slide back w/o a mag.

You don't.  Strip mag --> re-insert mag --> rack slide.

Um, OK, if that's how you've been taught....its your gun and your life, do as you wish. I've been taught that if I have a malfunction to 1) ensure the mag is seated 2) roll the handgun to the right 3) rack the slide (the old Tap, Roll, Rack). If that doesn't clear the malfunction I've been taught to 1) lock the slide to the rear to release tension on the rounds/magazine so I CAN remove the magazine 2) strip the magazine 3) rack the slide a couple of times to ensure the chamber is clear 4) and conduct a speed reload. I would never carry a firearm that doesn't have a slide lock, nor would I tell anyone else it's ok to carry a firearm without one. But that's just me.

One of the Team glock guys cuts half his slide lock tabs off for simular reasons.

Ive had a hell of a lot more premature slide lock and fail to lock back on an empty mag than i have had double feeds.

I trimmed one way down on a G36 because my thumbs hit it pretty regularly. On 17/19/26 size frames I haven't had that problem though.

I could still activate the slide catch to lock open the slide, but it was also totally out of the way of my grip.

Sure, if you shoot for Team Clock and are shooting for prizes and not to defend your life then go ahead and cut off the slide lock.  If your riding the slide lock and getting premature slide lock on a gun your going to defend yourself with I would suggest change your grip, use a different gun, or modify the slide lock but I wouldn't suggest cutting it off completely.

Right, lock it to the rear to take the pressure off the mag so you can get it out.

My normal grip causes the slide to not lock back on my 43. I really don't want to learn a different grip. I considered options to make the release lower profile but I wouldn't want to completely remove it.

I have thought about doing the same but never went through with it.   I like being able to easily lock the slide open if I want, and it doesn't happen unintentionally unless I have the extended slide stop on.

I guess if one had a recurring problem of grip interfering with the slide stop then this might be an option.

I prefer to have one.

I like to lock my slide back when inserting a fresh mag at the start of the day. Just easier to get a full mag firmly seated and get all of the slide inertia to chamber the round. Maybe I'm doing it wrong?
