What dictates the serial number of a glock? I snagged a 43 with a serial number XXX001. (XXX in place of actual letters)

Did I get the first of a batch, or something like that, or are the serial numbers just randomized?

The serials tell the month day and year by code.  A XXX001 would indicate you got the first of that batch of XXX.

The way most have assumed it worked was AA001-AA999, AB001-AB999, etc.

I understand from the serial number thread on Glocktalk that they have skipped some combinations here and there but that seems to be pretty rare.

The American guns started off with AAAA001.   The Austrian guns are about out of numbers (my G43 starts with Z).

Interesting. So you can tell from the serial where it is made right?

Mine starts with Z also.

Not trying to be a smartass or anything, but it will have either "Austria" or "USA" stamped on the left side of the slide to indicate where it was made.

Like all of my glocks, it says made in Austria by glock inc. Smyrna GA. I didn't really think that was an indicator of where they were made, because literally every glock I own says that if I'm remembering correctly.

Even the gun that was bought for me the year I was born (1988) says the same thing. Again, if I'm remembering correctly. Will check when I get home.

I checked, and yes they all say the same thing. I really don't think that's an indicator of where it is made but I guess I could be wrong.

That's not surprising because most Glocks have been made in Austria. All of mine were too but all you have to do is look at the slide. Top one made in Austria, bottom one made in the US...
