I was wondering why only KCI (which is not very good) manufactures Glock magazines.
It's a huge market so why no one else steps in? |

Because factory mags aren't much more than you could make/sell a comparable aftermarket mag for, they're readily available, and Glock edited WTF does being a Glock fanboy or not have to do with it? Glock factory mags are more reliable than KCI - bottom line. |
|
Because you can buy Gen 4 factory mags for $20 bucks. For a polymer/steel mag that's pretty durn cheap. KCI has been trying for years and they aren't much cheaper and they are far less reliable.
In order to compete in said market your mags must be less than $20 and function flawlessly. That's an awful high barrier of entry, for a very small margin of profitability, with the added negative that most people who care won't bother buying from you anyways because why even roll the dice. ETA they must function flawlessly (at least as well as factory mags) because KCI has the cheap may or may not work 100% market sewn up. |

So you all think there is nothing to make better in the Glock mags? Glock is constantly improving and revising the followers as needed, they function 99.9% of the time, they are durable, last, cheap, easy to find, and just WORK. What needs improving? I have old pre-pan mags that still work and I have brand new ones that work just as well. |
| With the exception of the 1911 and some mec gar magazines the well supported history is guns tend to be more reliable with oem mags. With glock factory mags around 25 bucks I doubt anyone could make a significantly superior magazine at or near that price point. Glock mags are cheap and work. There is likely no profit to be made from an "improved" after market magazine |

They're great to sell at an enormous profit during a panic, though. |

Not at a lower cost, you might be able to make a slight improvement but it wouldn't be cheaper to buy. Quoted:

I really miss the time just after the ban ended when Glock mags were $14. With the dollar in the shitter and people very sensitive to increases in gun prices, Glock rose the price of mag. I bough all I needed at $14, the problem is I didn't buy all I wanted!
But to the OP's point, Glock mags are about as cheap as you can sell a quality magazine. With better springs the KCI mags would feed better. With some sanding you could get them all to drop free. In the end you'll save money buying Glock rather than wasting ammo testing the KCI mags. |

I'm not certain, but I don't think there is a difference in mags between Gen 4 & Gen 3 and possibly even earlier gens. Second, have KCI mag prices gone up dramatically or something? I bought 6 KCI 15 rnd G19 mags right before Newtown for $6 each and they have all run flawlessly. Given that, I have no reason to complain (yet) about the KCI mags. |
