My Gen 4 came with the back straps but I don't want to change the feel of the
Gen 4 grip. IS the short Grip force beaver tail the way to go to retain the stock
grip, but have that extra bit up top?

Why not cut down a beavertail and see what happens? Cut down the M grip below the trigger housing pin and see what it feels like.

Gotcha. A set of GFAs and the Glock beavertails are about the same cost, so you'd probably be better off just buying the GFA.

I prefer the Grip Force Adapters.  It does change the feel of the grip since it adds a little bit of thickness toward the top and none at the bottom, but I find that it's actually an improvement.  It makes the "hump" less pronounced.
