| This sounds like more a familiarity issue as opposed to one pistol being better than the other. I suspect that the OP might have the same issue if they were transitioning from the 17 to the 19. I appreciate the OP posting this because I think it a good example of the importance of training with the same equipment one intends to use. |
I have switched from the 19 to the 17 as well. I shoot them about the same... maybe the 17 a little better. My first handgun was a G22 (which is the model i probably have accumulated the most time behind despite my dislike for .40SW) so I may just be more accustomed to the full length. There really is no reason that you should struggle with the sight picture given it is only a 0.47" difference between the two. It doesn't happen like this for me every time esp when i am doing timed stuff but your sights should line up as you present (without you even needing to look for the sight). Whether it is a G19 or G17 how you present the weapon shouldn't change and thus your ability to line them up should be somewhat comparable (maybe SLIGHTLY more difficult with the 17 but ). My Gen3 19 is my carry gun and my Gen4 17 is my go 2 per se. Both have been flawless... i like the way the gen4s shoot better (no brass to face issues and if these problems develop, which i don't expect, i'll just go to an APEX extractor without much complaining). When i go to a new model (or just a new handgun for that matter) i'll spend a lot time with it watching tv and hold it at the ready position in at the chest and go to full presentation every time i see someone on the tv wearing a red shirt and work on my aim and tracking. IDK... it seems to translate pretty well to live fire for me.

I am faster out of the holster with my 17 cause of the longer grip even though it should be opposite since the 19's shorter slide. It also points better for me as well, but I shoot both the same on paper and I just prefer the 17's grip over the 19. It's most likely just a training issue for you. Practice your draw /presentation daily with your 17 and see how much better you will get.

Here is my experience:
I've shot a Gen 3 G19 for many, many rounds and have practiced presentation with it to the point I can get on target very quickly with it even with my eyes closed. I just picked up a Gen 4 G17 and plan on using it for a duty weapon and CCW after I've shot it enough and I discovered that with the largest backstrap it points exactly like my G19 does. I don't have to retrain myself with that setup vs trying presentations with the medium and no backstrap I had issues with my grip. I also prefer the much more solid hold and trigger finger location with the largest backstrap. This is me, YMMV. |

My shots are actually more accurate with a 19, I can fairly easily make a 100 yard shot on a C zone steel with either gun, and routinely practice long shots to really test the fundamentals of pistol marksmanship.
I have even made a 204 yard shot (laser ranged it) with my 19, it was a 24x36 inch piece of steel but hey, it was pretty damn far. That shot won me a 6 pack. Bear in mind I have sometching like 25,000 rounds through my 19 and maybe 1200 rounds through my 17. |

I shoot my G17 better than my G19...The old Gen. 1 G17 I own has been shot a zillion times and carried much(before I got it)..it's all smooth(literally a 'slick-grip') and has a nice trigger for a Glock.
My G19 is barely newer than the ancient G17...however it hasn't been used much. Trigger is not as nice as the G17. I figure if the G19 had as smooth a trigger as the old G17 I would probably shoot both equaly well.. |

I've got both. I shoot both well. They just feel different, and that, IMO is just a matter of trigger time. Both of mine are Gen. 4, and I have about 10K through each.
As for my likes? I think the 19 is the best Glock made. It offers all the worlds. It's small enough to conceal, small enough to throw in truck, big enough to be a viable weapon, should you even have to get n a major gun fight, holds plenty of bullets, and just shoots really well. Just my opinion, but I would love to hear others on this as well. |
