Can somebody please explain the differences of these to me please?  On the list this year, is a bigger gun, and not sure which to pick.  They will both probaly be bought sight unseen, so there I am.  Help please.

For the conversation, I already have 17's, and 22's, and well as a 19 too.

17l is half an inch longer, and doesn't fit in the idpa box
Also hard to get, limited runs

The 34 will be much easier to find.

I have heard nothing but good things about the 17L and would love to pick one up someday.

I have all the Glock 9mm's (except the 18 obviously). If you have a 17, and want something different, get he 17L. With that sai, I really like the 34. That probably wasn't much help.

Had both.  I kept the 34.

Had both kept 17L

That extra .7" makes a difference. The 34 is a decent gun. But the 17L is really something special. If you compete get the G34. If you want a hand rifle get a 17L

Hand rifle, I like that. I also have a Glock 24, I have a Lone Wolf 40-357 Sig barrel on back order. That will be a hand rifle!

This. if you buy a 17L you will be hard pressed to find a good compitition to shoot it in where your not shooting against hardcore race guns. G34 is a uber-niche pistol that gives you 100% of allowable length for IDPA.

All this is so true and yet I really want one.

I just want a cool gun to shoot, and enjoy.  I happen to like Glocks a lot, and am buying a few more. In going with one of the bigger pistols, just didn't know if I could go with the 34, of I just HAD to have a 17L.  Sounds like this is ARFcom, and now I know what I must do.

PS, what mags does the 34 take?  17's?

You will end up with both, likely.

The 17L is a large gun.

The 34 is big, but not obnoxious.

Also, if you're going to suppress either of them, both will be excellent hosts.

Here are few pics that will give you a good size comparison between the two.

Come on guys.  The obvious answer to any thread like this is to always get both!!

OP if it's to get a cool gun to shoot pick up the 17L first!  It will be a great pickup for a collection, and fun to shoot at the same time.  You can always pick up the 34 later.

I have shot a 24 (the 40 S&W version of the 17L size), and honestly I find the 34/35 size guns much more useful.  I was a little more accurate with the 24, but the 34/35 are plenty "shootable" without being ridiculously long.  They're also easier to find, usually cheaper, and IDPA/USPSA legal.

I have a 17 and a 17L. I'm planning to SBR the 17L. It is a very cool gun. I wanted as much barrel as possible so I'm happy I was able to find the 17L. (Ed's Public Safety in GA has a bunch of the 17L's, sequentially numbered, in stock. You can call them and order by phone)

I am savvy on SBR's, but how does this apply to a pistol?  Please explain.

There are stocks made to fit on Glocks. Add a stock to a 17L and you have a handy and reliable 9mm short-barreled carbine utilizing the 33rd Glock stick mags.
