I am considering taking the plunge into the Glock world.  I currently own M&P's.  I'm looking for a 9mm Glock, and the pistol will be used for range use and HD, not concealed carry.  I'm trying to decide between the G17 and the G19.  In the craphole state that I live in, I'm limited to 10 round mags, so capacity advantages of the G17 don't exist for me.  I mostly shoot brass cased bulk 115 grain fmj, and the HD round of choice is Federal HST.  I do have some steel cased tula that I shoot, but mostly favor shooting brass.  I have shot a friend's G19, so I'm not a complete stranger to the Glock.  One of the features I like about the M&P are the interchangeable grip inserts.

What are the pro's and con's between the G17 and the G19?  Which one would Arf recommend?

thanks

Ive got all 3 now, 17, 19, 26
I shoot the 17 best. Got the 26 for pocket carry, got the 19 just because lol
Shoot all the steelcase you want. I know I do.
If you like the smaller backstrap option get a gen 4. Youll get a spare mag

I got all these for around $420 ea. (ftf) after I sold off the extra mags since I already have over 20 hi-caps

The 17 is roughly a half inch longer in the grip and slide. You can't go wrong with either one. Best bet is to find a shop that has both and see which one feels best in YOUR hand.

I also recommend the GEN4 for customization of back straps and better texture on frame.

If it's not for concealed carry but you're limited to 10 rounds anyway, put your hands on both of them and get the one that fits you best.  The "hump" on the backstrap is slightly different between the 17 and 19, and you may prefer the feel of one over the other.  Other than that, the 17 has a slightly longer sight radius than the 19, but both shoot about the same in my hands.

The gen 4 Glocks also have interchangeable backstraps if that is a feature you're looking for.

For some weird reason, I shoot the G19 better than the G17

Since magazine capacity is not an issue for you, I suggest getting the G19. I can still get 3 fingers on the grip and shoot mine just as well as the G17. Plus you never know when you might want to start carrying it, and that half inch shorter frame and grip is much easier to conceal with a good holster (Crossbreed) than the G17. I first got the G17 with no intent to carry it then when I wanted to I had to get a G19. Good luck with your decision, you will be pleased with either one.

For just range & HD use I would go with the G-17 for the longer sight radius......Heck, I would even check out the G-34 too as it is a little bit longer than the G-17.....

It's true that you'll tend to shoot the G-17 better; but, regular practice will negate the advantage of a longer barrel and sight radius.  I carry, both, full size and compact frame Glocks.  It took me, about, 4 months of practice in order to handle my G-19 as well as I do  the larger frames.  If you're not going to be concealing it, then the G-17 would be the easier gun for you to instinctively shoot straight.

My own G-19 EDC:

Since there is no 19 sized M&P, I'm guessing you currently use the full size.  A 17 would be closer in size to a full size M&P.

FWIW, I use a 17 for HD and a 19 for CCW.

The M&P 9 has a 4.25" barrel, which I think falls in the middle of the G17 and the G19.  At this point I'm leaning G17, but haven't held it yet.

By the time I'm dressed adequately to conceal a G19, I can just as easily conceal a G17.

I don't like the G19 because of the way the "gap" between the frame and the magazine floorplate meat right on the "meat" of my pinky finger.
I know there are aftermarket floorplates to address the "gap-bite," but I'm not interested in "fixing" anything on a Glock.

I've had both and prefer the 19 as its easier to conceal, yet still completely capable of being a home defense/combat type gun

Get both!

Or a G19 and G34.

Both!

I have both, and both feel great in my hands.  I can shoot both perfectly as well.  I've actually shot the G19 more since I've had that longer, but the G17 feels very comfortable in my hands but in a slightly different (not worse) way.

The main thing I like about the G19 is it's more 'portable' in my EDC bag if I take it with me somewhere.  The main thing I like about the G17 is that my weapons-mounted lights don't stick out past the muzzle as far as they do on the G19.  That little difference in length makes a big difference in muzzle blast covering the lens of the light.

I have 2 GEN 3 G19's and 2 GEN4 G19s and 2 GEN3 34's
the 19s feel good in my hands I am not sure why the 17 doesn't feel as good but it doesn't and the 26 well its just to small for my big hands even with Pearce extensions or the gap plates
the 34 is just a sweet shooter and I shoot it very well but for EDC and nightstand duty I have the G19

I looked at a gen 4 G17 today, and really liked it.  I also checked out the G19, but I have to give the edge to the G17.

Does the gen 4 G17 have any bugs such as brass-to-the-face, or is it good to go?

Unless you use full power self-defense ammunition ANY GLOCK with a MIM extractor can give you BTF.  Some sooner, some later.

My gen 4 17 (US made) has been 100% with no "brass to the face".

Get the 19.

Unless it's a range toy.  Then get the 34.

19 you can still use the 17 mags if you wanted.  For range go with the 34

You will never know whether a gun has BTF issues until you personally shoot it with the ammo you personally plan to use in it.

Don't take anybody else's account one way or the other.

I have both Gen 2 G17 & G19.
I shoot the G17 much better as I have large hands. I can only get two fingers on the grip of the G19.
