Would you guys go with a glock 17 gen3 or gen4 and why?

Gen 4 because it will hold its retail value and sell easier if you do decide to sell.

No problems with the current production gen 4.

My Gen4 17 is crazy reliable.  I can't make it malfunction no matter what I try.

I've owned Gen 1, 3  & 4 model 17's

I only kept the 1 & 4.

G17, either gen ok with me.

Gen 4.  I like the more aggressive grip texture and smaller grip with no added backstrap.

I would get a gen 4 if I could only for the mag release, but if you find a gen 3 then they are gtg too.

Gen 4 is best.

I like the Gen 3. Get the one with the texture you prefer. Both will be reliable. The Gen 3 uses the original recoil assembly design.

This. I love the Gen 4 mag catch.

I've had three 17's, currently have a 4th Gen. Love it. Carry it daily, shoot it as often as possible.

Another vote for Gen 3. I just like the feel better, thirty years of proven performance, I don't think the Gen 4 is worth the extra $$$.

But either one is a good choice.

Only Glock I own, Gen 3 17.

I went with a Gen3. I prefer the grip texturing over the Gen4 style, plus that was soon after the Gen4 recoil spring issue. Additionally, the Gen3 I bought was about $80 cheaper.

Go with whichever Generation feels better in your hand. Both are excellent.

(I have since bought a G29 and G17L, both Gen 3's)

If you plan on carrying it inside the waistband, you might want a Gen 3 since the fours have a rough texture which is great in the hand but harsh on the skin.  It always kills me when I see a Gen 4 with an expensive stippling job as if the grip isn't aggressive enough.

I don't think the three offers anything the four doesn't, except maybe a slight break on price. If you need the backstraps or mag release go four.

The Gen 3 RTF has those fish gill slide serrations that people either really like, or really hate. I for one like them, mainly because they make the gun look better. The Glock is just a bunch of straight lines. The fish gill serrations break up the straight lines and make for a better looking gun IMO. I couldn't really tell that they made the slide any easier to work, but I've never used them with wet or gloved hands, so there may be an advantage in either of those situations.

ETA: Since I'm told that threads are useless without pictures , Here's a RTF G19. The serrations and texture will be the same on the 17.

i disagree that this is the reason it will resell better.  G17 [period] will resell right now, probably the day you put it up for sale.  i cant find a used G17 to save my life right now here in the DFW.

Also, i dont think gen4 has a "holds value better" advantage over a gen3.  there are plenty of buyers like me out there that shoot only gen3.  youll always have a buyer for a used G17, no matter what gen you pick.

Whichever one doesn't throw brass in your face.

You won't know until you test it.

Gen 4 all day long. Even though I already have a gen 3 19, I want to pick up a gen 4 19. Already have a gen 4 17.

IMO, the gen4 grip mods are fantastic and a huge improvement over the gen3.

I would go with the Gen 4 if the extra money isn't a big deal.  Generally ( at least here in AZ ) Gen 3's sell for $499.99 and gen 4's are $550 to $575.

SO for $50 to $75 bucks you get a double recoil spring that does reduce the felt recoil ( not a lot but some ) 3 magazines over 2 for the gen 3's, the checkered grips, adjustable backstraps, and an enlarged magazine release.  In my opinion, all that kind of pays for itself.

Just my two cents.

Good luck and either one you choose will still be an awesome choice.
