So a friend has a new G23.  She says the mag, when empty, will drop to the ground when released.
When there is a round in the mag, it will only drop a couple of inches.  Is this designed for a tactical
reload?  Rule of thumb is to not leave a loaded mag on the battle field.

my "early generation" mags without a lot of metal reinforcement would drag... my later generation(at one time I could identify the number) mags with the metal visible for the mag catch on the front all drop free...I don't think the "tactical reload" was planned, just a function of the alternative staggering of the rounds in the mag

Just to clarify this is a gen 4.  I have yet to examine the gun and have only been told
about it so it just got me thinking.  I shoot IDPA and it is against the rules to leave a
magazine on the ground with a round in it, so in reality this may be a nice feature, if
it is by design.

Usually mags with weight in them (bullets) drop free easier, seems odd.... are the bullets reloaded.... has someone checked the C.O.L?  Does it do it with all ammo?

IDPA rules state that you can drop a magazine with ammo in it if you are clearing a malfunction, but you are correct.... any other time it's a procedural.

It's not a nice feature, I'd want my mag to fly out on their own, without any assistance.

All three magazines she has does it.  I will examine the firearm on Thursday.
Actually if we want to get technical, you can drop a loaded magazine in IDPA, you just can't leave it behind or
fire another round before retrieving it.  That is my point to it being a nice feature.  I don't know, I will have to see how
this gun is behaving.  Does seem odd, but for a tactical reload, I think it might be faster.
In a tactical reload you have to have the new magazine in hand prior to dropping magazine between two baby fingers.

Mystery solved..  She's an idiot.  Mag will release with a few rounds in it, however
when the magazine is full it will not.  The double stacking creates some minor swelling
and the mag is a little tighter in the receiver.  Not a big deal as I wouldn't be dropping a
full mag...ever...to the ground that is. Sorry for the "false" alarm.  Next time I will investigate
first and ask questions second.

factory mags?

i have only ever seen exactly what you describe with non-glock mags.  i had some promags for my G23 that expanded when loaded.  i returned them to the store and bought factory mags, and this hasnt been an issue since.

All factory, Gen4.  I don't have a problem with a full magazine NOT sliding out of my gun (like butter).  Nothing like
a concrete slab to ruin a good mag.
I am assuming they are expanding/bulging, no other explanation. The mags work fine until you get about 10 rounds in them.
