| Local gun shop has a new G19 for $539, think it's a Gen 3. They have some of the new Gen 4 guns but none in the G19. Other than the grip texture how can I tell the difference between a gen 3 or 4? Also is there any benefit with the newer Gen 4 over older models? |
| I like the gen4 a little better but both are gonna serve you well. the gen 4 has a better grip texture more rougher, it has a duel recoil guide rod and comes with 1 extra mag and 3 backstraps small, med, and large. you can also switch the mag release if your a lefty. both will shoot the same its just a no brainer too spend the extra 30 bucks and get the gen4 if you can.be a little patient im sure one will come in soon. |

On the gen, the magazine catch (release button) is bigger. about twice the size or bigger. It also says Gen 4 on the side of the slide. Also has a more aggressive grip texture, smaller grip with backstraps to make it the same size or larger than a 3rd gen, dual recoil springs that reduce felt recoil (minimally effective in the 9mms), and comes with 3 magazines instead of 2 (unless the 3rd gen is a blue label, which would also come with 3 magazines). |

Easiest way to tell if it's a Gen 4: It will say Gen 4 on the left front of the slide. If it has finger groves but doesn't say Gen4 on the slide, its a Gen 3. No finger grooves, Gen 1 or Gen 2 I've had Gen 3 and Gen4 Glocks. The slide finish is much better on the Gen 3's that I have had.

There is a reason that Gen4 are harder to find than the other generations, They are better.
Here is a link to the equipment exchange where New Gen4s are selling for $525, with free shipping. Don't forget to use the AR15 coupon code in the link. Gen 4 G19 According to their web-site, they have the Gen4 G19 in stock too If you want to go even cheaper yet and have a little bit of time, join GSSF (Glock Shooting Sports Foundation). You can get a new Gen4 G19 for I believe it is $425. Every time you renew your GSSF membership you get a coupon for one discounted glock. So if you are a new member, you have to sign up for a two year membership initially (first year plus your first renewal) to get the coupon. I think a two year membership is like $60 and it is something like $25 a year after that to keep up your membership. You get a magazine and a hat too when you join. Not a bad deal at all. |

$539 is too much, and if you have to pay sales tax on top of that I wouldn't do it. The gen4 can have a different extractor, a backstrap system which lets you inter-change the palm swells, says gen4 on the side, has dual recoil springs (unline previous generations which didn't, except for "baby glocks").
I personally like gen3 better. I've seen the grip on the gen4 get smoothed out. However if you get stippling done this isn't a concern. |

I'm a smaller guy, so all the things listed above are important to me. The texture, grip size, and larger mag release are huge improvements in my opinion! As far as saving a buck or two, it doesn't generally come into my decision making process. If you buy local, and the local dealer spends time helping you make the correct decision, then how can you complain about a $20 difference in price? People do have to run a business.... I know many of the "expert" internet shoppers have a hard time with this concept. If you know everything, then sure buy it at the lowest cost. Most gun owners don't know jack (this also includes some stores/store employees) about firearms, and simply regurgitate garbage they read/hear on the internet. ~g |

I'm with you on that point. I like to keep my $ local and support the neighborhood fun shop. Yeah, sometimes I can get a better deal - but the relationship I enjoy as a "good customer" is worth something too. I have a Gen 3 G19 and I absolutely love it. Other than changing out the sights, I wouldn't mess with the gun. The grip texture / palm swell, etc all fits my hands and I can run the gun hard and accurately. I'd say it's my second favorite Glock coming in just behind the full sized G17. |

Now that's funny, is SOF still being published? ...I might even have some early 80's issues stashed some place ~g |
