I am looking to get a handgun for the home that meets the following needs (in priority order):
- reliable/durable - most commonly available caliber - most affordable caliber - most compatible with aftermarket mods/upgrades - versatile barrel replacement for other calibers? Uses: - Home Defense - Traveling (in car) - Some carry in situations where conceal isn't a huge issue (ie: in a messenger bag while walking at night, etc). I will be getting a CCW handgun later. I am thinking the G17 because I think 9mm is the most widely available caliber and I like the idea of the full-size comfort since it will be primarily at home. I believe all the Glock variations have enough stopping power with the right defense ammo, so I am not overly picky on which caliber. Which one do you think I should get? |

You answered your own question with the G17. Consider the G22 if you can handle 40S&W. I hear that 40 is very manageable in the gen4s. I only own a gen3 G22 myself. This. The recoil from a 40 is more of a snap back. More snappy than a 9mm. When compared to a .45, the .45 is more of a push back, as compared to the 40, which is more of a snap back. It's still manageable though. |

I think the 45 is worse than the 40, but I don't have the biggest hands.. That said, the 9mm is still cheaper, and probably more fitting for the OP. |

You could get a 23 and get conversion barrels in 9mm or .357 Sig. My opinion is that there's nothing that beats a 19 for a general purpose/all around pistol. I only suggested the 23 for the conversion options, but a 19 is the right choice for everything but bears or competition, they have 20s and 34s for that stuff. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

I would get the G19. I know you said you were going to get a CCW gun later but the G19 is more versatile in my opinion. If something happens down road to prevent you from getting that CCW gun you will already have the G19 available to fill that position if need be. Get the G17 later if you feel you still need it.
Yes I like the G17 a lot, but the G19 is just THAT good. |

.40 is more versatile, can shoot 9mm out of it with a 9mm conversion barrel and 9mm mags. You can't shoot .40 from a 9mm Glock, so getting a .40 is like two guns in one. Well...three actually because you can drop in a 357 Sig barrel and shoot that. All ammo is hard to come by right now, but .40 is often more available than 9mm. But with a .40 you can have the best of them all. The G23 is the same size as the G19, it's my favorite all around size. You can go larger (G22, G35, G24) or smaller (G27), but they're all nice and the .40 affords plenty of power (165gr @ 1250, 180gr @ 1200 and 200gr @ 1100 fps from a 4" bbl with handloads), capacity (13+1 G23, or 15+1 G22) and the same size as the 9mm Glocks. Recoil isn't bad with a .40, more than a 9mm but far from bad. |

The answer is either a 19 or 17, hold both at the store and decide which feels better in YOUR hand.
I have a 17, 22, and 27 (the second two are .40s). I like 40 and 9 both, and with ammo selection 9 is fine plus you get more capacity. I think for a first gun 9 is the way to go. If you want to expand to 40 later that is fine. |

Okay, so I am seeing a lot of votes for the 19th, or 17 only if I have big hands.
Other than the slight size difference, does the 17 have any advantage over the 19? From what I can tell they have the same mag capacities (can both take 17/19/33 round mags). Is there some other benefit the 17 affords? |

(full size) Some people get the 17 and cut the grip down to the size of the 19 for the best of both. All 9mm Glocks can use the mags of a larger 9mm Glock. The 17 can use only 17 mags and 33 round mags The 19 can use the 19, 17 mags and the 33 round mags, but not the 26 mags The 26 can use the 26, 19, 17 and 33 round mags ETA- I did not touch on the conversion/barrel swap business... |

I'm 6'1" to give you some perspective. I know at least four of my friends who went with the 19, one because it was the prefered side arm of Mossad. I like it but it was too small for my hand the 17 was a better fit so I for my first and only Glock that's what I went with. |

I guess at this point I will just go to the store and rent both. My range membership gives me unlimited free rentals (pay for ammo only). I think they have both 17 and 19 on the rental rack. |
