So which one do you guys like better 17 or 34? I know the 34 is for competition, but man it would make a great HD gun or even carry with the right holster.

Quoted: Thanks I completely forgot its the same size as the 1911.Jukeboxx... yes...if you go to a USPSA match, there are typically as many 17s as 34s in Production Class...I shot my 17 at the Ft Benning 3 gun match for a couple of years before I picked up a 34... the 34 points better, and with older eyes, the added sight radius advantage helps....as for size, for all practical purposes a G34 is no larger than a 1911, if you include the beavertail... http://i825.photobucket.com/albums/zz180/LesSnyder/001_zps4d2302b8.jpg |
| I have a G19 that I carry off duty. I am issued a G22, but I'll be carrying my G35 as soon as quals come around. The extra length isn't a big deal in carrying it. (The frames are the same on both the 17/22 and the 34/35.) The extra sight radius makes long distance hits easier, and the gun has a nice feel to it. My 35 is the Gen4, which comes with the same "dot" 5.0 pound connectors as the other Gen4 guns. You'll have to find a Gen3 to get the lighter connector. Or, just buy the connector and drop it in. Then you can have the lighter trigger and the smaller grip of the Gen4. |

Yes, I occasionally CCW the 35, albeit in cooler weather where I can wear a jacket to hide the grip and slide length better. Of course, with an IWB holster, the extra length hanging down is not an issue. Or, if you're fairly tall (I'm not). Mainly, though, I'm talking about drawing from a holster. |

Quoted: You won't see much difference between a 34 and a 17 at the range, USPSA or IDPA, and you'll see what the difference is. The 34 is more forgiving when shooting fast and a little sloppy as far as hits are concerned. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile Is that cause the 34 trigger connector and sight radius? |

Quoted: I just traded my 19 for a 34 Gen 3 for a HD gun, I may carry it too. It has the adjustable rear sight which is the only thing I don't like. Gonna install night sights before I carry it. The 34 must be 2x as good as a 17 I would trade in my 19 but my wilfe loves it. Check out the Trijicon HD night sights.

When I was looking for two .40 pistols, I was tossed up between the Glock 35 with 27 and the M&P40 Pro (5-inch) and Compact. For me, if I'm going with a full size pistol... which is not my duty gun, I prefer the longer slide/barrel. Nevertheless, I don't carry a full size when off-duty (from time to time, I'll carry the SIG P229 when I'm not working), so it might be a moot point.
My choice was S&W, but if I had to choose between those two models... long slide. |

jukeboxx...combination of both, though my 17 has an aftermarket connector....with the slab side, and thumb forward grip, I index the 34 on target better...I shoot a fixed Heinie rear with about a .230" trall front, .090 wide...
I shoot either a pistol or 3 gun match each weekend with the 34, but carry the 17 in an off body bag when traveling in the car, so don't carry either CCW... I carry an LCP in the pocket |

I was using a 19 for IDPA and when I switched there were shots I thought for sure were going to be off paper that still hit centerish of mass. The shorter the radius the more crucial alignment is at a distance. I'm not saying it allows you be a slob, but when you're working fast you can get away with having your alignment off a little. My only complaint (and I always have at least one on anything) is that towards the end of the mag the balance of a 34 will shift and the longer slide will cause a little more recoil bounce between follow up shots. The 19 with it's shorter slide isn't even noticeable. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

I like them both and at one point had them both but ended up selling the G34. The g34 is a cool gun and if you looking for a range\competition\fun gun I'd probably go with the G34 but I stuck with the G17 because I feel the G17 is better suited to a wider range of functions such as duty or CCW use
In truth, there is really very little difference between the 2 and the difference they do have, are not that major. You'll probably be fine with which ever one you get I just think the G17 is the better deal price wise and better suited to grunt work. The G34 is sexier and garners more cool guy points. Choose which ever one appeals to you more? |

I own 2 17's and a 34. Honestly, can't tell much difference between them. If you're planning on shooting competition, then the added sight radius might be beneficial in situations where speed matters as mentioned already. If I could only keep one, I'd probably keep a 17. |
