what ammo are u guys shooting for self defense? what grain ammo seems to shoot the best? any reviews done?

I'd agree with looking around for ammo reviews here. There are a lot of them.

Tobe useful, I have a G23. Close enough? I am shooting 180 gr. Winchester Ranger T.

Started with Corbon 135gr, then switched to Speer GD 155 gr, then to Speer GD 165 gr...currently with my final and ultimate choice: Winchester Ranger-T 165gr for the G35, G23, and G27. Go for the Gold Dots until you can procure some good Ranger-T ammo. RA40TA is the product #.
