Going to get my first Glock tomorrow....Glock 19 I now about the problems people have run into with the Gen4's and some Gen3's.....But this is not why I am asking. I am asking because well, I am wondering if the extra money is worth the new recoil spring, mag release and texture? I dont know which way to go....its alot of money either way, is it justifiable going a little more for the gen4? |

Hard for me to answer. You'll have the opportunity to hand both for a little while at the shop before making a decision?
I'm a Gen3 guy. For me, I'm neutral on the new mag release. The new grip texture I like a lot and would love for them to come out with Gen3s with that on them (no backstraps). I don't care about the backstraps. The new recoil spring assembly is supposed to last longer in terms of round count life. But, the old RSAs were very cheap. I haven't looked up the price of a new Gen4 RSA but if they cost twice as much as the single spring RSAs (like the G26/27s do), then I don't really care either way. So, I don't really dislike the Gen4s, I just don't really care about any of the things they "improved." For you, if it is about feel and function, you'll have to decide which feels best. |

Very well stated, Sir. I agree completely. I used to say Gen 3 only because of the Gen 4 reliability issues. Now it seems that have jumped the fence over to some Gen 3s as well. My recommendation is buy whichever you think you'll like better personally. |

Yeah, I think being a Lefty, the bigger mag release is easier for me to manipulate with my middle finger, (want to keep it on the left side) and I love the grip texture! just gotta convince myself its worth the extra cash.... |

What I pay for when I buy a Glock Pistol is the absolute knowledge that the gun will go bang every time, when ever, and always.
That peace of mind is what you're really buying with a Glock as I see it. You cannot get that with a Gen 4 gun after all that's gone down. |
| You really cant go wrong either way in my opinion. I've owned several gen 3's and gen 4's, they all work like they should. My first gen4 19 was an earlier model manufactured in 2009 and I had the typical erratic ejection and feeding problems associated with the early recoil spring assemblies and ejectors. Glock sent me the updated recoil spring and ejector and the problems were solved. Newly manufactured gen3 and gen4 19's have all of the updated parts. If money is a deciding factor for you, a new or used gen3 19 will be your best bet. In my area, new gen4 19's cost about $50-$75 more than a new gen 3. The grip texture and larger mag release is worth the extra money to me. Good luck in your decision! |

The recoil spring is supposed to last longer on the Gen 4. The texture is a lot better and if you want to stipple it which I have done a lot of myself, the gen 4 is a ton easier to work with. The gen 4's just have nipples that can be ground off and stippled over rather than the crazy mangled backstrap of the gen 3 that has to be sanded down to who knows how thin and then stippled on top of that...
Get the Gen 4. Extra mag, interchangeable grips, dual recoil spring. There really isn't a reason not to. I have two gen 4's that have at least 4000 rounds (that number goes up weekly) between the two of them with no problems to speak of. Not one. One piece of brass in the head in 4000 rounds is not a problem and it happened exactly that many times, once. |
| The recoil spring assembly is metal on the gen4. I have not trusted the plastic rod type that comes with the gen3 ever since I had one let loose on me and disassembled itself. Thereafter, I usually replace the plastic ones with a SS aftermarket soon after I get it. With the Gen4, I don't have to. Just my opinion and experience. I think the Gen4 has nice improvements and is worth the extra cash with the extra magazine. I haven't had any issues with mine. |

I asked the same question in August of last year on Glok Talk, and was told to buy a gen 3. A huge mistake that was. I was in the market for a Glock 19, and ended up getting the gen 3. I bought it brand new, and left it 100% stock. I had erratic ejection from the start with all types of ammo, and 4 stovepipes out of 500 rounds. I had to send it back to Glock 3 times and they didn't fix it any of the times it was there in Smyrna Ga.
So eventually I had Glock swap out my gen 3 G19 for a gen 4 G19 wih the new ejector, RSA , dot connector, and they installed night sights for my troubles. They did it free of charge, shipped it right to my door. I haven't had any malfunctions in over 2400 rounds. It shoots flawlessly every time, ejecting to the right with all ammo. Long story short, I recommend buying a gen 4. If curious, checkout Glock Talk and do a search for my name(smitty704)and read the threads about the issues. Good luck! |

Congrats! Let us know how it goes. Thanks! Only negative I see to the Gen4 is all the options! backstraps and safety......Im a super indecisive person when it comes to options haha....I have found myself switching the backstraps to see which one is "best".....this may take awhile.

Replacing the plastic guide rod does virtually nothing to aid reliability. I'd call your incident extremely isolated, a fluke. Many millions of Glocks and other pistols use a plastic guide rod with zero issues. It's not a really stressed part. |

Took my gen 4 G19 to the range today with 200 rounds of federal champion 115g FMJ, and it ran it like a champ! I am approaching 3000 rounds with no failures. The gen 4 G19 is my favorite pistol.
You made a great decision, I hope it treats you well. P.S- my girl friend is 5'2", 95lbs, not strong at all, and limp-wrists all day with zero malfunction. No erratic ejection/stovepipe's like I had with my late model gen 3 G19. My gen 4 chews ammo up, and spits it out looking for more. Enjoy! |
