I have read some advice on this board that those looking to get into the glock club (like I am), should avoid the gen 4. because it has not been "proven" like the gen 2 or 3 have.

is there any worth to this?

what features would hinder the glock gen 4 from being as good as the glock gen 3. ?

is it like the ruger mark II and mark III where people bash the III because it is different?

seems there are a lot of anti-"change" sentiments around here

thanks.

The Gen4 has some notable improvements over the gen3, but they are all purely subjective which is perhaps why you see so much disagreement on them.

The new grip texture, shorter grip, and mag release are all substantial improvements IMO.  I much prefer shooting my Gen 4 19 to my Gen 3 because of these features.

The Gen4 has had some teething issues with reliability.  The 17s that initially came out were over-sprung and even the Gen4 19s appear to be on the "hairy edge" of reliability with standard pressure ammo.  This may be rectified with a lower power recoil spring assembly from either Glock or the after-market.  I fully expect to see some "traditional" single spring conversion for Gen 4 pistols pop up online relatively soon.

I am currently still carrying my 3rd Gen 19 until my 4th Gen has an appropriate round count through it with zero malfunctions.  I fully intend to switch over but only after due-diligence.

.40 is fine, 9mm still questionable.

There isn't anything wrong with the Gen 4, it's just analogous to being in "beta" right now.  They're working bugs out of the design.  I've no doubt that Gen 4 will turn out to be an excellent and reliable pistol, as its ancestors were that came before it. I'd just wait for them to work out the kinks, and until then, the Gen 3 guns are still fantastic pieces of hardware.  I opted to stick with Gen 3 recently, but may upgrade in the future.

I carry a G23, Gen 3.

It seems people are particular to different generations.  Some won't go from their Gen3's to a Gen4.  Then there's those who won't give up their Gen2's for Gen3's or 4's.

.....and so on and so on, vice versa, etc, etc.

I like my Gen 3's, but admittedly haven't  handled any other generations.

I had the same questions.  However, when I went to the fun store to buy a Glock 17 last week, I got a great deal on a Gen 3, thanks to the Gen 4 wave.  I'll plan to get a Gen 4 later.

I also plan to add a larger mag release to my Gen 3.

Happy...

Has anyone ever had or heard of a reliability issues while using +p ammunition in 9mm, which is what should be used for self defense?

Is there an easy way to determine whether a gen3 or gen4?

I believe your question is how to tell the difference between a Gen 3 and Gen 4 Glock, if I understand you correctly?  The answer is, YES.  The new Gen 4 guns have removable sized backstraps on the frame, a larger mag release button, a double spring recoil springs, a different texture on the frame and they say Gen 4 on the slide.  The Gen 3 does not have removable backstraps, it as a sort of smooth texture on the frame compared with the Gen 4, has a regular or extended mag release button and a single spring recoil spring.  For more info., google Gen 3 and Gen 4 Glock.

Now, I haven't seen one up close, but I hear they also say "gen 4" on the slide too.

Yep, they sure do

Mine is only a couple of weeks old, so the 310 mixed rounds I've put through it so far are hardly an indicator of long-term reliability. That said, I've been unable thus far to induce a malfunction from limp wristing, tea cupping, or mixing several types of ammo into the same mag. Most impressively, 90 rounds of improperly crimped reloads ran without a hiccup. These particular reloads hang up on the feedramps of both my 1991 era Sig P228 and my Ruger P89-but the G17 didn't care.

Think I'll keep it

I just bought a Gen. 4 today and LOVE it. No problems running 100rds through of WWB. The gun is awesome, recoil is minimal and the large mag release is great.

I put 300 rounds so far through my Gen 4 19 without any problems except for the first 50 rounds.

I was using cheapo UMC 115 grain ammo. I was limpwristing (first time shooting the gun). I had several malfunctions for the first 50 rounds. Switched to 124 grain Federal AE and have ran fine ever since. Not one problem!

The UMC ammo felt REALLY weak. Some rounds felt much stronger than others. I think it was a ammo issue.

I love my new glock!

I haven't and with 9mm...I will be using +p.

I know that Glocks should fire anything and that these gen4s better get fixed with shitty ammo but I have a saiga 12 and Mossberg 930SPX (shotguns) and run all sorts of loads through them.  I run 71/2 birdshot through them and they are not 100 % reliable with that load (trying to fix that with the saiga 12.  But, with high brass or buck shot and slugs, I have never had an issue with them.  You don't hear people with these guns saying they won't trust it with SD because they can't cycle birdshot, well actually you do have some of those people on the shotgun forum and they are just about as stupid as the people complaining about gen4s not cycling ammo that they wouldn't use for self defense.  If it has a problem cycling +p ammo, then I will be concerned.

The Gen 4 felt better in my hand, so I'm taking my chance on it.
