My job allows me to wear casual (Levis 501s or shorts) most of the time, so I usually wear casual belts with them.

However, for an upcoming pistol class, it's been suggested that students wear a dedicated pistol belt.

I've heard pretty good things about the Wilderness Original Instructor's belt, and it seems that it would go with my 501s or shorts and might not be too out of place with BDUs (though I'm leaning toward the 1.5-inch version so it'd be a tad narrow in that application).

Am I pretty close to choosing something that'll work or am I completely off base? TIA for any advice.

I wear a Wilderness Original or a Mitch Rosen leather belt all the time.

I'm not sure which would be more low profile for you to wear at work.

Either would do well for a class, but you should train with what you use.

I wear Don Humes whether I have a gun on or not. If you plan on carrying inside the waist band you need to get the belt a little big.

Milt Sparks will give you a great selection in terms of top notch quality and what look you want, but it takes time (time worth waiting).

If you need a gun belt quickly that is casual looking and will function for the course, Impact Guns currently has the Galco 'COP' in stock for $41.

After carrying concealed for over 12 years, I finally broke down and bought a Kramer gun belt (1.5".)  OH MY!  Why the hell didn't I buy one sooner!!  It makes a complete and total difference in how comfortable the pistol is to wear.  I initially choked on the $100 price tag, but I'm now a convert.

As far as the Wilderness belt is concerned, I have a few friends who use them, and they really like them.  I prefer leather belts, but I've thought about getting one of those too.  If I could find one in desert tan, I'd be all over it.....

Mine is an Aker.  I like it because it has a spring steel insert that distributes the weight of the pistol more evenly, and keeps the holster from making my trousers snag.

It looks like a high quality thick dress belt.

I actually need a new one, as I have been wearing this one for 8 years now.  In other words, THEY LAST!

Also consider High Noon Holster.

But what ever you do, get a good belt. It is probably the single most important part of carry equipment.

I'm currently waiting for delivery of my Wilderness Instructors belt in khaki. Pretty close to dez tan; close enough for me in this application, anyway. (Also offered in black and OD.) Decided to go with the Wilderness belt because all the leather ones just looked too much like dress belts, plus I have a favorite belt buckle I'd like to use.

Galco also makes (relatively) inexpensive quality gunbelts--$75-90 range.  The only complaint I have is they don't seem to offer a dark brown belt; otherwise, I'm pretty happy with them.

My pick is a wide brown Fossil for about $25 bucks. Works like a charm and you don't have to pay $70+ and wait 2-3 weeks to get it. Just small enough to fit through belt loops and is very substantial/thick. Plus it looks better than most gun belts. For those that go for style points.

Not being familiar with Fossil fashion products, is it as stiff (supportive) as my dedicated gun belt?  My belt will not sag.

What he said. Great belts, almost impossible to wear out. Since I work plainclothes almost exclusively now, usually wearing 5-11 pants, the Wilderness belt is perfect.

When I have to dress up (court, or my wife threatens me) I wear one of my two Milt Sparks belts. Wonderful quality & well worth the money & the wait.
