You should note that reciprocity refers to offical agreements between states, but does not cover all the states where a person with a permit can carry. For instance, Utah, and I think 1 or 2 other states, recognize "all other valid CCW permits", so any permit to carry issued by any state, covers a visitor to that state - so long as they comply with Utah law, while they are in Utah - So it is your burden, and responsibility as a visitor, to be familiar with Utah law, most especially, where the law allows you to carry, and where it forbids carry, to be in complience. Same goes for any state you carry in, on the basis of official reciprocity. Something for *me* to be especially aware of, as New Hampshire only forbids carry specifically at schools, and in courtrooms, wheras some states we share reciprocity with have long lists of places forbidden to carry. 2 States, Alaska and Vermont, require no permit whatsoever - for residents AND visitors in Alaska, and for residents and visitors with their own states permits in Vermont. Vermont issues no permits atall, to the best of my knowledge, while Alaska *does* issue permits to those who want them, in order to allow its residents to share reciprocity with the states that officially have reciprocity agreements with Alaska, when they are travelling. |

You also have to worry about residency issues. The following States only extend recognition or reciprocity if you a resident of the issuing jurisdiction of the recognized or reciprocal State; CO, FL, KS, MI, NH, SC and WV. In those instances, you either need to get that States CCW (only possible for FL, NH and SC), carry openly (if legal) or carry nothing). Another issue is recognition, just because your State recognizes a State you wish to visit, it does not necessarily mean you can carry in that State (i.e. NE is recognized in NV and TX but NV and TX CCW holders cannot legally CCW in NE). |

Last I checked, Florida has reciprocity with NH, in regards to carry. |

Vice versa is also true, you have to be a NH resident to legally CCW in Florida with a NH permit. I'm a Nevada resident. I cannot legally carry in NH on a non-resident Florida nor can I legally CCW in Florida with a non-resident NH, UT or VA. I can legally carry in FL with a FL or a resident NV. I can only legally carry in NH with a non-resident NH. I can only legally CCW in MI if I have a license or permit issued by the State I reside in. I cannot legally CCW in CO, SC or WV with anything I have. NV is on the KS recognition list, so I am good there. You're a NH resident according to your user info, so you are good to CCW in FL with your resident NH. Just having recognition or reciprocity is not enough. Fortunately the States that only extend recognition or reciprocity to residents of the recognized or reciprocal State are in the minority. |

It is always a good idea to to your homework before you travel.
I have always made sure that I was aware of what states recognized my permit: PA INFO Unfortunatley this does not mean that everyone where you are traveling will know the actual laws. While in NC I spoke with some officers due to a mistake on my part, which was quickly cleared up. (Very polite and professional police department!) The problem is that all of the officers stated that there is no such thing as my permit being valid in any other state, and it is something I must have made up. Again...NC DOES NOT RECOGNIZE ANY PERMIT FROM ANY OTHER STATE, according to this group. I am seriously considering my future of traveling with any weapon. If we, permit holders, are going to be the only people aware of the laws, we are at the mercy of any offical that is unaware of them. Comments, ideas, thoughts? |

Print out the actual laws from any state you will be travelling in - right from the .gov website of the state, and carry them with you, if you will be carrying. If you had handed over the relevant packet to the officers in your incident, it would have been cleaned up right then, and their misconception would have been corrected. |
