I finally decided to get my CHL and will be taking the class tomorrow. I'll be using my G19 for the range qualifications. Any tips or things to watch out for? Thanks.

it'll be a LONG day, so just be ready for that.  there will likely be a few "normal folks" along with some "weirdos" in your class, but you're all there for the same reason...  I was surprised at the cross section of humanity that was in my class.  it was very encouraging.

other than that, just pay attention, ask questions if you have any, and encourage the instructors to show the cool videos they might have.

where are you taking your class?  (and good on you for deciding to take it.  )

Get good sleep and a good breakfast.

Be sure to ask any and all questions you might have. That's what you are paying for. Plus, other students will learn from your questions as well.

I came up with a mental list of them before class.

And start thinking of some post-training classes.

Good luck, have fun.

Thanks. I'm taking the class at Bailey's in Houston. Nice little gun range near my house.

Me and my son will be taking the CHL course on Monday Nov 14th at Hot Wells in Houston.  I understand the class is full and has 7 active military people taking it. Thanks forthe tips on "a long day".

Um, Nov 14th has past already...and it was a Friday...

For those that are a few dyas away from the class, keep a pad of writing paper/recording device handy. Think of questions to ask and write record them. For the class, write the questions down and leave space for writing an answer. As the instructor is conducting the class and they answer a question, write it down. If there are questions left unanswered, then ask them.
If there is printed material presented during the course, keep it and use a colored marker to highlight pertinent information.

Yes, the 14th has passed.  Sorry about that.  The class is Monday the 24th.

Thanks for the tips.

Well, the CHL class I took last Sunday was very informative. The instuctor turned out to be an off-duty police officer which made the class quite interesting. Nothing like first hand experience and a working knowledge of Texas gun laws. His carry weapon of choice happened to be a little 9mm Semi-auto pocket pistol (Kel-Tec?). Not my first choice in CCW but I was impressed with the size of that little bugger. He could draw and shoot that thing in flash too. Anyway, the class was very informative and well organized. By the end of the day I had all my paperwork including fingerprints and passport photos ready to mail off. The best part of the class was the range qualification drill. It was much faster paced than I expected. We shot single and 5 round groups from 5, 10 and 15 yards. I managed to shoot pretty well using my G19 despite the fact I hadn't been target shooting in quite some time. Overall, I think it was a good class and I'm glad I finally completed it. Nice to know I will now be licensed and completely legal to carry in a few months.

Thats all?  No two shot drills, no two followed by three shot groups?

My son and I just finished our CHL class today.  The shooting portion was a little hard for him, but he passed.  I scored a perfect 250.

We shoot 5 round shoots, 1 round shots, and 2 followed by 3 round shots.

I had to use a borrowed Glock.  My son and I were going to share our 9mm, b ut since th eclass was very small, they had me use the instructors Glock.

Overall, it was a long day, but the classroom sessions were interesting thanks to many stories and personal experiences chared by the instructor.

For anyone hesitant to take the class, I recommend it.  The shooting section is not hard.  I will have my son back at the practice range many times before we are licensed.

If you are capable of basic oral/reading comprehension and you are not blind, you will be fine.

The shooting test is an absolute joke.  They might as well not even have it.  I scored 100% on my last one and I was point shooting / firing pretty rapidly for all but the 15 yard portion.

All you need to do is stay awake and be able to follow simple instructions.

The shooting test was pretty easy. I would call myself a novice pistol shooter still and I scored the highest in my class. I didn't make 100%, but I was close with 246/250. I believe it was the 3rd time I ever fired my pistol. My instructor asked me, "Did you learn how to shoot through ROTC?" and I told him, "No, Youtube videos." He bursted out laughing.

Oh yeah, I was also the only "kid" in my CHL class at 19 years old.
