| OK, I think I screwed up and got my last post canned. Fanny Pack poll. |
Look into the Comp-Tac holsters in their Quonset hut section. Over runs for $40 and under. |
|
Its just another opion. I've got shoulder, IWB, OWB, drop rigs and a fanny pack. Each has its advantages and disavantages. Right now going back to Iraq (3rd trip) I've got all the above in my box for both a M9 and M1911. I use the fanny pack when running PT and going to gym or showers in the camp. Rule number one of a gun fight is to have a gun. CD |
That wouldnt be a bad choice for a quick BoB for your preferred pistol ...Basicaly a grab and go but I dont know that I would want to carry it with me all the time... |
Oly, Lightfighter, fanny packs......Is there anything you do like?? Or is negative your middle name? A fanny pack is the next best thing to open carry, if you dont want to do body concealed. Fanny packs are nice because snap-click and its off. You dont have to take half your clothes off to get the whole thing disconnected, and its firmly attached when you want it. Also with the quick string pull, the fanny pack has easy & fast use ability, left or right hand reversable. I knew a cab driver who wore one, said it was the best way to carry in a car, and have it at the ready at all times. |
|
I usually leave my fanny pack in the glove box, w/ 2 - 3 extra mags minus the pistol. If I have to go someplace where I can't carry, I'll take it out of my IWB, and put it in the fanny pack locked in the glove box. I don't do this very often, and don't leave it there for long. |
Agreed 100%. A fag bag is how I carry 99% of the time. I carry my wallet, checkbook, spare mag, pen, a G17, and sometimes other stuff too in mine. I take it off to drive and then strap up in the parking lot when I'm going inside somewhere (unless it's a no carry building/area). If the front seat area is full, I pitch it in the back seat, but drape the belt portion over the center console - I can have tha bag in my hand in one second. Fanny packs keep your gun spotless too. I just have to remember to remove the gun and air out the bag if it's hot out and I've been sweating a lot. I think the headphone idea is GREAT! Thanks, anomad! |
|
Not my favorite way to carry but it is handy in some situations. I cut the manu's label off the front of mine and put a patch that came off of a local sporting goods company's stuff sack on. If I mentioned the name everyone in the Pacific NW or US would know whohisKeep in mind, a thief will immediatly go for a fanny pack and it is a noisy and slow way to draw your pistol. |
|
I use one from time to time, particularly with clothes that won't properly support an IWB holster, or if I have a need to lock up/unlock/lock up the firearm repeatedly. They're also far superior to a 4 o'clock IWB when driving. That said - does anyone know of a fanny pack with steel reinforced straps - something thata thief would have a difficult time cutting off? |
|
Just a little FYI, I recently had the great idea to get a small fanny pack and put an extra AR mag and an extra glock mag in it, it goes next to my bump in the night guns. This way, if anything unexpected ever happened, and I got up naked in the middle of the night, I can still carry extra ammo with me. Been trying to figure out how to solve that problem for a while now. |
I've had one for about a year now and like it a lot. I work downtown and it seems like most of the men are carrying a bag of some kind or the other over their shoulder. It doesn't scream gun like a fanny pack, which I do own a couple, and carries more. I work as a network admin and need to have a bunch of crap with me. The fatboy carries my Glock 26 with 2 spare mags in the body side zippered pouch. I carry a basic first responder first aid kit in the main pouch and my company palm and server rescue discs in the outer pocket. Just to mix it up I have a Dillion Precision concealed carry case. It has two side pockets and a middle zippered pocket to carry my G26 and spare mags. It's not as versital as the FatBoy but keeps them guessing at the office. |
| I just got back from vacationing in a tourist town and it seemed that every other person had one stapped around their waist. Only a few seemed to be bearing some weight but it could have been a camera etc . I am getting one for bicycling, any brand suggestions? |
Cav....... I almost spit up my coffee when I read the last line...... A). When did we all start taking tac lessons from some towel head that splits time between his gypsy cab and the quicky mart? B) How is a waist pac the "best way to carry in a car, and have it at the ready at all times." when you have a seat belt directly over the top of it? Fanny packs in general..... if you are a hippy - wear tie dye, have a pony tail or dreds and wreak of patchuli oil - yeah it is more than believable that you keep your weed, pipe, lighter, hacky sack and welfare card inside. Anyone else - it screams gun. Good luck |
|
I love the "it screams gun" comments. I live in Florida. Fanny packs are common down here. So long as it is appropriate to your clothes, no one will give you a second look. Now if you are wearing regular long pants and a fanny pack, you are odd or carrying. And when I see an odd lump under an untucked shirt, it is either a colostomy bag or a traditional holster. Look, the laws say concealed, not hidden beyond all reasonable doubt and detection. |
|
Why not just take up crossdressing and carry a purse? I used to take a baseball cap and place my glock 26 in it and hold the bill of my cap and the adjustment band in my hand so that it formed a tote. That was if I was in a hurry and just wanted to carry my CCW in my hand. In case of emergengy just throw down the ball cap. Edit: If I am wearing khaki shorts with the cargo pockets I just put it in there. Who cares if it is bulky and jingles around because for what anyone else knows it could just be a large set of keys and a glasses case that is making my pocket bulge. |
In the big pockey (the one with the drawstring) there is a little pocket on the inside and both of my pistols fit in there with the grip exposed so I can grab it. I can take a pic if you want. There's also a side pouch that fits a spare mag perfectly, I'm almost positive that's what it's there for since they fit so well. |

Fanny packs are great when riding (bikes or motorcycles). Access is fast and no one looks twice at someone wearing a fagbag on a two-wheeler. I also think they're great when driving. For those who've never actually tried it, you lift up the pack and run the seat belt across your hips just like normal, then let the pack ride *on top* of the belt. Very fast access and fully concealed. Really good for those long road trips. And as someone mentioned, lots of vacationers carry them so you have good camouflage in the tourist traps, rest stops, and such. For me a fanny pack is no substitute for some Comp-Tac kydex day to day, but it certainly does the job when I can't carry normally. YMMV. Alpine |

k - cuz I always love this topic Everyone who says "oh and they are fast too...." Get your shot timer...... place your gun in it....secure it .... zip it up...strap that bad boy around your waist .... or in some cases toss it over your shoulder ....... draw and fire one shot...... Distance = 7 yrds Only "A" zones count (we're playin to win, right?) Now remember - the idea here isn't to prove that it is greased lightening - the goal - show yourself what it really is....... so if you carry car keys, a wallet, chap stick - whatever in there with it ........ do just that when you time yourself. If you don't have or have access to a timer have a buddy use their stop watch - but let us know that when you report back Report back with your time. Variations on the theme: While walking While seated at a table While seated in a car (preferably buckeled in but I realize I am one of the few here who shoots from and around a car consistantly) Off your body (like it is sitting on the seat next to you) This is not a competition. This is not a race. Please be X-tra careful. This can be and should be a learning opportunity for everyone. Thank you |
Believe your missing the point. First rule of any gun fight is to have a gun. So fanny packs give an option when a strong side holster is impractical due to dress or activity. I can't go diving with a pistol strapped on but can have a gun in a fanny pack out on the boat with no second glance. Yes, their a bit slower if your used to something else. But I'm already behind the power curve if they already have thier guns drawn and I'm reacting. Read the situation and deploy accordingly. CD |

CD - I believe I have read you are about to head back to Iraq right, and you are well trained right? So, are you just arguing for the fun of it? We are in agreement - there are scant occassions wherein it might be the best option. (And in my mind that basically comes down to wearing a whole lotta lycra). Aside from that, a fanny pack is no different conceptually than a brown paper sack for off body carry or a back pack if you are leaving it on a boat while you are below. As for dress... I dunno, somehow I figure it out on a daily basis from shorts and sweats to khakis and suits... bike rides through the woods, long drives, meetings with clients, and pumpin gas in my rig ...no problems here. I assume you have shot a mechanized Teuller drill or participated in force on force? It was a simple exercise for those that advocate them - how long? Fact is if someone is around the 'gun culture' be it civi, LE, or AH they know tht a fanny pack is a common carry method. It creates a focal point where there shouldn't be one. If we are talking about the clueless masses - who cares, that isn't why one carries. My point - if one feels the need to carry why would they carry in a manner that not only draws attention by anyone that is in the know; but also in a manner that is by its very nature slower to bring a weapon into the fight - esp considering that most things happen from belt buckle to 7yds? Good luck FWIW - for those that may not be familiar with Teuller and its relevance to law and practical shooting see the link. www.defensereview.com/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=4 |
| Lastly - to state the obvious - that is the worst cliche in the world. For the record there are no rules in a gun fight - if you don't have one when it begins and you cann't get out of there, you better figure out a way to win......the only goal is to survive...............rules .....pffffff |
| i wear my maxpedition m1 waistpack on my belt 24x7, working and off work. i could easily fit a small pistol in it. if i went with one a bit bigger, like the M4 waistpack, i bet i could fit my glock 27 in it. noone has ever said anything about it. most people dont even seem to notice it. |

and idiots in this thread are amazing.
