I haven't ever carried during the summer because i recieved my permit last fall, but while i was thinking the other day i came up with a dillema.  In the summer on the weekends i spend a lot of time at a cabin we have on a large lake.  I do quite a bit of boating and my usual atire is shorts a T-shirt and sneakers, sometimes i do without the shirt, i was thinking of wearing a CQC holster or something similiar, and just open carrying when in the boat.  In NH it is legal to open carry any where you can do so concealed,  i was wondering if the lake patrol (fish and game) were likely to give a lot of crap over open carrying?  I was also wondering if there were any special restrictions that applied to being on the water and armed?

Thanks for the help

You'd have to check your state's laws.  Packing.org has a good source of information.

Fish and game folks are considered law enforcement in most states, so they would be just like a police officer and the same rules would apply.

Other than that, I would suggest watch your back stop if you shoot.  Bullets tend to skip across water for miles like a flat stone.

Ah good question, water is considered state land.  If it is legal to open carry on state land not a park, then it is to legal to open carry.

I have open carried canoeing in about 12 states with no problems.  I will mention be wary of state hunting laws and your weapon selection.  Hunting laws can be used against you if the wildlife guy is an asshole which is rare.

I usually packed a .38 snub for snakes or a 9mm handgun.  Traditional hunting type guns can get you into the hunting law issues.  Still many of these can be avoided by simply having a hunting license and saying you are hunting varmits with year round seasons. Once again check your state hunting regulations for many regulate what you can carry if hunting.

Be cautious for shooting over water is also limited by the states so carry and shooting are two different topics.

This really isn't as big a hassle as it sounds for you simply check the wildlife site for the state you visiting.

The only time I have been questioned was during duck season but then hunting ducks with a handgun was pretty ludicrous and the Wildlife guy took my answer that I wasn't with no problem.

Those DNR guys are known to arrest unfortunate, innocent people who open carry in GA lakes.  I heard it from my friends.  Cops can't arrest you in parks, but the DNR guys have full authority.  Just put it in a holster and wear a Hawaiian shirt over it.

Thanks for the help.  I don't have to worry about the hunting issue, because this is not a huntable lake.  It is a major boating lake, and one of the largest in the northeast.   Thanks again!
