I've been eyeing this sexy beast VZ2008 @ Aims for about a week now and am about to pull the trigger but I have a few questions.
1. I've seen some VZ58's with optics mounted and they seem yo be attached via an AK like rail however the CAI looks like a slick side. Is there a way or is this receiver just made without? 2. I've read that CAI is having an actual firearms manufacturer make the receivers; does this meen there's a good chance it won't be a POS like a lot of other Century guns? 3. Who has one from AIMs and how do you like it? Does it look as good as the website pics? I'm having a hard time passing on this one. Especially with the accessory package that it comes with. Guide me in the right direction guys. |

Guide me in the right direction guys. 1. They don't come with the rail. You have to buy one and install it. Then you have to get the rail adapter that slides onto the rail and you can mount the optic to it. Czechpoint.com sells them. Much easier just to get a rail for the upper handguard and mount something there. Unless you are looking to mount something with magnification. 2. Some other contractor is making the receivers. A few different names have been found on the receivers. Not sure how much of a hand Century has in the constuction. I've had nothing but problems with mine. It came with a severely canted front sight post. It also has the "VZ Gremlin" where it won't reset the trigger every 4 or 5 rounds. Both are fixable. I should have sent it back to AIM but since it was 10 degrees outside I didn't really feel like shooting it. And once I found the Gremlin problem it was past the 30 day warranty. Now AIM won't do shit. So if you get one shoot it as soon as you can. I fixed the canted sight myself and am looking to get my bolt carrier tabbed. Hopefully that will fix it. Just google VZ Gremlin to find out more. 3. Besides my problem the gun seems to be built well and is in good shape. At least compared to a $500 AK. The finish is very nice. I've replaced the grip. Since the one that comes with it was made for Eastern European child like hands and it is useless. Its make it very comfortable and easier to handle. It's a good deal with the mags. I haven't read about anyone else having problems on ARFCOM. Guess I got a lemon. |

Guide me in the right direction guys. 1. The two most basic ways to mount an optic on the 58 is with either a railed handguard set or with a small side rail with an optic mount. The Century 58's have never come with side rails mounted. If you wanted to mount an optic in the rear position you'd have to find and have a side rail installed on the receiver. Then find and put on a matching rail optic mount. There's really only one side rail to be found. It's made by Czech Small Arms/Czechpoint. But they're pretty hard to find and often out of stock. The CSA has a short optic mount for it. And then a newer company has one as well. The RSR vz 304 rail. It uses the same CSA mount. You could probably find the side rail and mount eventually. It might take a while. There are also dustcover/receiver covers with built in rails. But I have no experience and don't see them very often. 2. Yes, the receivers in fact the entire rifle is put together by someone else. Vz's are difficult builds. The Century 58's may still have the occasional issue. (Indeed the Czechpoint rifles will from time to time as well). And though the QC is a little less than the CSA/Czechpoint rifles. Overall the Century 58's are well built and good for the money. Generally much, much better than any Century made/supplied rifle. Just check for common known issues before receiving the gun. 3.Check threads on this site and on czfirearms.us in the vz. 58 section. These appear to be rather good overall and people are generally happy with them. Prices went up after AIM sold out a few shipments of these. (They were selling for around $429.) But these are good guns for the money. |
| Averwo thanks for the review on yours, nice to hear the good and the bad, sorry you've had problems with it. There was a Czech guy (Brome?) on another thread that said there was another way to fix the gremlin besides adding the tab. Don't remember the details but something about shortening one of the springs incase you are interested. |
| To comment on the construction issues, I have bought three of these. All were beautiful, but all had minor or major issues. The first had a messed up safety and was replaced by century. The second had some cosmetic issues, mostly just from having surplus hardware and a couple scratches from CAI. They are pretty minor and I will be shooting thing on, so despite CAI offering to make it right, I am just going to shoot and enjoy it. Functionally the gun runs perfectly. Honestly, I never would have noticed if I had not owned the first one, which was cosmetically perfect. The last one is mint, other than the grip came cracked, which century is offering to replace. Yes minor annoyances, but they are well made and IMHO the best bargain in military-style rifles right now. |

Hopefully it works. I guess the spring will be the second thing I try. That thread is very hard to understand. You basically have to go by the picture only. I'm not sure to remove the spring in the first place. |
