TAPCO AK Handguards - New Design! (Page 2 of 3)
I've always wanted a synthetic stock in the old Soviet red-brown color like the 1970's era plastic magazines and bayonet scabbards. The new Indian INSAS rifle (sort of an AK clone) has this red-brown color for its synthetic stocks:   AK stocks in that color would be way cool! |

The Indian INSAS rifle has turned out to be less then hoped. They are going to the AK-103 and black stocks, which TAPCO already makes. AK-103 to be made in India |
+1 For the price Saiga's are selling for, and ease of conversion, there aren't a lot of manufacturers out there for aftermarket parts. Especially stock sets. Even if you run with the Ace "non-conversion needed" folder or fixed stock application for these weapons there is still a HUGE need for handguards and good retainers for the Saigas. |

Also agree with the other postings. Original lines are big with most of us who purchase an AK...because it looks like an AK. I end up trolling in "fun shows" for bakelite or other furniture to replace grotesque wood furniture often found, or available, for builds. ...Saiga market, big. Even if an AWB comes back, these will still be imported in the sporter configuration. Conversion of the Saiga won't be prohibited (hopefully) so there will still be a large draw towards these parts. I own a Saiga 12 and Saiga 308 because there are unique weapons...but i'ts taken me months to put together the parts that look right on the weapons. Yugos...well, everyone is looking for good replacement hand guards for the cracker jack box plastic that arrives on the underfolders now. |
+1, the saiga market is huge. You can pick them up cheap and convert them cheap. I would like to see some kits to make this easier, but most importantly, an easier way to convert the forward grip to a regular (not "galil") grip would be much appreciated. Maybe some kind of retainer that will work on the Saiga so that any handguard can be used. |

And a minor voice of dissent- I could care less about "traditionalism." I like the ACE tubular folding stock, not their mechanism, so much. I really like the Romy wire stocks, but they could benefit from a pin-retaining assembly. Handguards- I use $13 Choate's with sections of ceramic heat shields epoxied in place. The M16 Clinic makes the ceramic panels, and they're great, but a foreend incorporating them (or something similar) would be better. BTW, heat dissipation is far superior to the metal shields, which simply reflect heat back towards the barrel. A Beryl-style top rail, with cam-lock rear, and a peep/aperture BUIS. Rocker Mounts has a fairly decent looking rail, but it lacks the QD and meaningful BUIS. Sorry, traditional AK sights suck, this is one area needing major evolution. |
I like the side rails. It would let me use the handgun light I move between several long guns. |

| I would also like to see some tactical hand guards for the Yugo AK variants. I have noticed that a lot of the rear sights that come with the SKS and AK rifles are not made of top quality. It would be nice to see a TAPCO rear sight for these rifles that would have a windage adjustment and possibly a peep type of sight incorporated. hanks |
I would love to see this in a side folder. put it in a kit with the russian clone stuff everyone keeps suggesting and I'd buy it in a heart beat.... |

Will this galil style fore arm fit a romainian under folder? I am eye balling ths set up,but i am wondering if the stock will fold up under the galil style fore arm.Also,is the front pistol grip thin enough and set far back enough to let the stock fold up ? Please let me know.Their might be others out there that want this shielded fore grip (if it fits romy underfolders

I hope the folks at Tapco are listening! Yugo, Yugo, Yugo! I had to resort to drilling and fitting an AR-15 tapered rail to the bottom of my hand guard. It worked out well but the rails I mounted on the side of the plastic furniture my Yugo came with ARE NOT of the strength I would like. The bottom rail restricts my cleaning rod from being carried in the rifle also. Surely the market is there for Yugo's. I am close to just letting the money fly and purchasing Ulti-Mak's upper gas tube replacemet and the lower hand guard as well. What's $300.00 ha ha If Command Arms is listening Yugo, Yugo, Yugo. We are currently looking into the Yugo AK series to determine what we can do to incorporate our stocks, handguards, and pistol grips to function on them. Since you have a Saiga-specific fore-end, how about making a polymer version of this stock (made by BattleRifleG3 on Saiga-12.com)? It is for an unconverted Saiga. Key point for me is that the dip be no lower than the bottom of the receiver so it will not be considered a pistol grip under CA law. I would like it in a really short length -- 10" OAL.

How about simple peep sights like Kreb's custom that uses the range slide and looks similar to the factory equipment. I know at least a few people, including me, prefer an american peep sight over the russian blade sight. It would be a simple part to cast or machine. ETA no plastic! The Galil type folder is a step in the right direction toward an affordable and cool folder but it lacks stability and durability expected of a weapon. Also, if you could produce a folding mechanism that doesn't look like an afterthought for bulgarian triangles or even folding polymer full stocks I would buy one. Romy wire folders are a great, sturdy stock but a left side folder triangle would probably be a hit. I can already think of a perfect plan for the whole deal to convert a fixed stock to a polymer side-folder without a tacky plastic block sticking out or floppy operation. |

yeah but then some of the people that like the AK like myself like to put these things on them. it all ends up being 'to each their own' I really like it. I would personally get the bottom/top rail one, but I have no use for the side one. I don't plan on doing anything with my ak that I ever need a flaslight.... :) when would these come out? I currently have the current ones form you guys. I wanted to get a rail system for it, but I can't dish out near 300 bux to have a bottom/top rail system, so this would work perfect for me... I like it! affordable rail system. i'll go for it :) |

I got my start with guns tinkering with SKS's a couple of years back and I've found most of the Tapco products (5rd SKS mag, not so much) to be solid and a good buy. I happen to be one of the many (they sell a ton of them, someone is buying the stuff) who like the slab-sided space-gun look, even on an AK. My first build is likely to end up with a T6, Tapco handguard and their black polymer trad-style grip. I'll expect the "get that crap crap off the AK" pics in the mail :) What I'd like to see is a folding version of the T6 that doesn't have a big-arse button in the middle like the ATI Strikeforce, or even better a folder like this...  ... in polymer and US made with the hinge close to the the receiver rather than farther back like the clumsy-looking folder Tapco currently market for the AK. Just my 2c. Let the flames begin! |

I'm sorry but all the "we're listening" bull is just that. If Tapco thought we had something to contribute to their R&D process then they would have ASKED before the tossed out yet another piece of plastic. But ol' Bill is too paranoid that another company will snake a design and beat him to market. Wanna know why the G2 trigger set is so nice? Cause Tapco didn't design it! G2 Stands for Gordon Technologies. Now. Imagine if Magpul made AK furniture. Hmmm? Yea!!!! |
| This thread was a "what do you think of it" thread, not a trash on Tapco thread. They are just doing what they see fit to make some money. By the way, no one is putting a gun to anyone's head and making them buy anything. Also, the reason I love my AK's, and don't even own an AR anymore, has nothing to do wit the furniture. Guys that use these weapons for the intended purpose, love places to hang gear. Lights, lasers, forward optics, while looking cool, they do serve a purpose in the real world. For Joe Rambo, probably not in need of a vertical grip and OTAL. But who cares, if you don't like it, don't buy it. Either way who cares what Tapco does? |

Nice way to shit on a thread. Anyhow I would love to see U.S made pistol grips that look like the factory bakelite (spelling) grips. I hate having to retain the black plastic grips to remain 922 legal. It just looks wrong and I do not like AKs because I am cheap I like them because............well I just do and want them to stay as true to form as possible. |

I'm not sure why everyone is complaining about Tapco parts. I have plenty of them on my AK and I like them all. I hope you don't mind me posting a pic of it. Everything feels nice and solid. The only thing I didn't like was the rail cover moved around. Since putting the fore grip on it it's been great. I really need to check out some Tapco Mags soon.
Tapco isn't for the wood stock AK purist. If it's not your cup of tea, it's understandable. I'm not sure what all of the negativity is about though.

Odd.. On mine the folder locks closed on a piece of metal sticking out from the side of the wood fore-end. I've had this stock on and off of 4 guns to date, and I've never had to drill on any of my receivers. It even fit on a brand new NRA mini without issues.

Normally, I am not one to like TAPCO products. I will be blunt with that. Granted, I love the G2 Trigger, though.
I do really like the new stock you guys have out. BUT, what is needed is a pair of standard, polymer handguards, patterned after the newest AK pattern, and packed with heatshields. Keep it simple. Produce them, and I will buy them. I can't seem to drop the money on the KVAR. And, I want some Flat Dark Earth! |

Hmmmm.... Saiga 12 parts you say. I'll post pics tomorrow of the Saiga Furniture set we debuted at this year's SHOT Show. It covers the stock, PG, and handguards. I'll get images up tomorrow and see if I can get you a ballpark MSRP.

I've built two TAPCO AKs, and liked both of them I still have one.
I did switch to a UTG quad rail forend. The new TAPCO fore end would still be on it if it were available at the time I built it. My one grip it with the Galil hand gurd rail kit. The rails are not that good. I got some aluminum rails to use instead. The spacing on the TAPCO rails was all wrong for just about everything. The Tango Down battle grip did not like them at all! |

Well, um, I LIKE rails and gadgets and things. I like AKs, and I like accessories. There is enough room in the AK market for both those that like stock-looking gear and those that like to 'accessorize' so I don't understand this hatred of anything advanced looking. Sure it's a cheap gun as a base, but just like some people like to trick out Hondas, AKs can look cool all dolled up too.
I like some of Tapco's offerings in the AK market, but I like some stock sets too. I have some CAA handguards currently and a Tapco collapsing stock on order. If I get another AK I would like to see a stock-style buttstock in tan polymer with a sling loop of some sort. |

To the TAPCO rep's on this board;
Hiya; I've got 2 AK's, ones a WASR-10 with wood furniture that I want to keep pure, however; I also have an AK that came stock with all tapco furniture in box (in fact I think the only thing that's not TAPCO on the thing is the milled receiver); as it's already a flat black plastic rifle; why not go for the gusto and make it a full tacti-cool set up. You guy's have kits on your website - that's great, but how about a COMPLETE conversion kit e.g. Also, side rails would be awesome as well, they don't even need to be full length, just enough to clamp a tac-light on one side and maybe a Uni-max Picatinny railed laser on the other side. The new railed forearm w/ matching pistol forward pistol grip SAW style grip Choice of side folder or collapsable buttstock option to include your new sling system as well I'd think i'd be entertaining to turn my plain jane black rifle into a much more ninja 'brown'  rifle. (I'm assuming that second pic in the series was just a side by side comparison of the line and that it's just the fore arm that retails for $49.99)
You already "kinda" have this set-up, just with the non-railed galil style forearm furniture. 
I'd put this together myself right now if it weren't for the whole "economy is in the crapper" thing going on right now. |
