Any good method to get a similar finish to the darker finish I usually see on the laminate polish handguards?  Pics if you got em.
Thanx

The information you seek is in this thread, about 2/3rds of the way down...

Wow! Both guns look great!.  Sgtstinger, your handguard looks awesome, but I'm looking for more of an original look like Joe's.  Does anybody know of anything I could use to protect it but not make it any glossier than Joe's?  Also, does sanding it down at all have any effect on color?

Are your handguards already as dark as you want them?

If so, you can probably just wipe them a few times with actone to strip off the old finish...it should come off without a whole bunch of effort. Just make sure that you use a clean cloth and that it's pretty wet with acetone. It would probably be a good idea to wear some latex gloves when you're doing this...

You can then use some Formby's Tung Oil Finish. You'll want to use the low-gloss formula. Apply one coat & let dry then apply a second coat & let dry before buffing lightly with the Very Fine (0000) steel wool. You can then apply a third coat and buff it lightly with steel wool when it's dry. It should look pretty good. The Poles used an oil finish on their AK wood, so your finish will be about as authentic as it gets...

BTW, the handguards on my Polish Underfolder aren't as shiny as they look. I used satin-finish Spar Urethane on them and took care when applying it not to put each coat on too thick. If you put it on too heavy, it dries shiny. I used the spar Urethane because it protects the wood so well.

If you want to see what "new" Polish wood looks like, check out the the set of Polish wood I refinished in this thread:

It's shiny in the pictures because it was still wet from the first coat of Formby's. I ended up putting 6 coats on it for extra protection, but after buffing it thoroughly with very fine steel wool, it's not as shiny as the pictures I posted. One nice thing about Tung Oil is that if you mess it up, you can usually fix it pretty easily. If I were ever to mess up the Urethane on my underfolder, I'd have to completely strip it and start over or it wouldn't look right.

IM or e-mail me if you have more questions...

Hope this helps...
