Most people rate the polish ak 4th or 5th in order of quality.    I have handled the chinese, very nice, but I do not see the big difference.   What attributes are being measured to cause the others to be rated higher?

Specifics often mentioned are fit & finish and machine work. The surface of the parts is much different between a Romanian and a Yugo for example. Same with Polish. Such ratings are somewhat subjective, though there are some objective measures, too.

The russian and bulgi must really be something.  The polish I have seen I thought were very nice in those respects.

Polish parts kits that I've handled have been absolutely top of the line.  The Poles helped the Bulgarians set up for the AK, so they are at least equal in my opinion.

There have been VERY few complete Polish AK's imported into the US, mostly as one off's to attempt to arrange importation, but they never flew.

If we are talking about F/A military issue AK’s:

Polish milled PMK (AK-47) & PMKS (AK47S) I would rate as 1st or 2nd in the order of quality. The machining, stock sets, parts fit and blued finish are superb on these weapons.
I would also go out on a limb and say that the Polish AKM series were very consistent in terms of quality compared to Russian AKM /AK74 production which over the years had inconsistencies in terms of quality. I would rate Polish AKM production quality as tied for 1st with the East German MPi-Km (AKM) series.
It is true that Poland supplied Bulgaria with AK-47 parts, and that a lot of the early Bulgarian AK74’s used mostly Russian parts. ( see Masami’s AK book for such an example ) So here is a potential inconsistent parts quality situation, that in my opinion prohibit Bulgaria from being #1

If we are talking about semi AK’s we have available here in the U.S.:

How do you grade the Polish AK’s when 99.9% of the Polish AK’s here have U.S. receivers, and other possible inferior U.S. made parts? Not to mention the quality of the assembly work done by the ak smith....

The Bulgarian SLR/SAM series probably run a close race with the Chinese Polytechs as the best quality AK models here in the U.S. With the Pre-ban Hungarians, Yugo's, Maadi's following.....

On a side note:
It seems the Romy F/A military issue AK’s are of a much higher quality than the imported semi models.
On the flip side, Chinese F/A military issue AK’s seem to be of a lower quality than the imported semi models.

just my 2 cents of course...
